Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
I must say that I am finding this conversation fascinating...so thank you to everyone posting
I adore Trek Music and agree that TOS had some simply incredible pieces. I think TNG managed some beautiful and impressive pieces also, only a few of which were included on the couple of CD releases (and Best Ofs...) which I have. The sad and beautiful theme for The Inner Light is a definite (if obvious) highlight.
I am very excited for Giacchino's score, I think he has developed an identity for LOST that is both dramatic and off-beat. Part of me wanted Horner back in the chair, to expand upon the themes from his two entires, but I am now more interested in hearing a new voice in the ST universe.

Why hardly anyone died on the Star Trek animated even. Course it wasnt on prime time, like Quest was. I cant think of an animated series that anyone died in until Robotech. That was almost 20 years later.
Sorry, now back to Trek XI. If you guys see any cast pics, or pictures of the Enterprise, let me know, even if you dont wanna see it!

Here is the link to the documentary on YouTube. They are labeled part 1 part 2 and so on, but sometimes they are spelled out Part One, or sometimes using the numeral Part 2....so you'll have to look for part one so you get them in order.

You're welcome Lou!
I just saw Code of Honor, the third Next Gen episode aired and music scored by Fred Steiner. His only TNG credit.
To my ear, it felt synthetic. I could hear some vapors of TOS type of melody. But overall, it wasn't very well integrated. But then, the whole episode was stiff and hadn't gelled yet. The cast wasn't there yet either. But this is a topic of discussion for another thread.

Rick,
Agreed! My son pointed this out the first time he watched the series a couple of years ago. He liked that aspect (characters dying) quite a bit. He even mentioned how The A-Team rarely (if ever) had a death on the show. Jonny Quest certainly had plenty of them.

Nelson,
On another Board on which I posted a few years ago, someone who knows TNG rather well said that that series used in one episode a very similar score to the build-up music heard in The Corbomite Maneuver. (This is the section with those wonderful trombones playing very loudly; the specific segment I am referring to occurs in a few places, one of which is where the cube is spinning very fast on its axis.) To this day, I have not had any luck locating this episode. He assured me it was in the first season. If you (or anyone else) can recall the TNG episode that used something similar to this, please let me know.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
TNG only had one really great composer. They let him go because he used THEMES, and he was a little OVER THE TOP. Something that Berman lackey Dennis McCarthy would never do. I think it was Ron Jones, but i could be wrong. I know TNG has one or two other composers i really like too, but they were held back by Berman. I remember one of the earliest TNG episodes i liked, Hearts of Glory. It had a theme, and it made the story have feeling. they used the Klingon theme many times in the episode...great stuff. Like others i really like the Inner Light suite on the TNG soundtrack. Beautiful music, that tells its own story.
