Also if you haven't heard it, check out Giacchino's music for the Metal of Honor video games. It's truly epic.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Scott- Trek had a lot of great music throughout! I have several episodes I ripped as MP3 audio's from the DVDs in my iPod and I always enjoy the shift in the music in the second season. Some of my favorites is Amok Time in the opening teaser and Catspaw has several passages that are very up tempo. The part you describe in Armagedden is cool. I really like the jazzy versions of a Trek score used in the party scene in The Conscience of the King.
Lou, I listened to the whole interview. I was a Johnny Quest fan too, but it's been so long, I have no recollection of the show. The interview has made me feel pretty good about what he'll do for Trek. As you eluded to he's quite a fan of the genres!

Nelson, the complete Jonny Quest series is out on DVD for several years now.
Highly recommend you pick it up for the music if nothing else!

Nelson,
Yes, that passage during the party scene is excellent! It's great being able to recall these segments during a particular episode. And Catspaw has that wonderful, creepy sounding music. I love the one used near the beginning (when they're on the planet); this one was used in a few other episodes as well. (I'm thinking of the C / D / E-flat / D-flat ....) And when Korob overhears Sylvia talking to Kirk, a different theme is eerie and quite memorable--makes one almost feel 'queasy' in spots.

Jonny Quest was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I only realized the other day that the man who did the voice for Dr. Benton Quest shows up in Scooby Doo, Where Are You! a few times as well. I own that series on DVD, and I haven't regretted it. One of my personal favorites is "The Robot Spy."

Lou,
I may have missed something. Did Giacchino write the music for Jonny Quest, or was he a fan of the show and its music? I haven't yet listened to the audio link you've provided; I'll do that tomorrow from work.

I did this as well. The music on the 5.1 tracks is mostly isolated in the L/R channels. I think I have MOST of the Star Trek TOS music on CD now.

There is a fascinating 27 part unofficial documentary about Jonny Quest on You Tube. Lots of info I didn't know about the show.
YouTube - chrisweb037's Videos
The music for Jonny Quest was written by Hoyt Curtin who also wrote the famous Flintstones theme and the Jetsons. I think Giacchino may have just liked the music because it has that classic 60s bigband jazz sound. Great horns!

Doug,
Thanks for the information on Hoyt Curtin. I will have a look at the Youtube link you provided tomorrow from work.
On Friday evenings, we often watch an episode of The Herculoids, Jonny Quest, or (now that I picked it up recently) Scooby Doo. I must say Hanna/Barbera knew what they were doing.
I just had a peek at some of their creative work. I knew that they did The Jetsons, but I did not know that they created The Impossibles (another wonderful cartoon from my youth).

Glad to help. I was very impressed with the work this guy put into the documentary. He also appears to have access to the original session tapes from the music scores to Jonny Quest and it makes me very jealous.
One of my dream projects is to do a live action version of Jonny Quest! Been thinking about it for years, but now I hear that Warners has hired someone to make a film version. We'll see.

I thought I was the only one crazy enough to make MP3's of Star Trek episodes! It made commuting in traffic more tolerable!
I had not considered buying the Jonny Quest DVD set, but I'll definitely think hard about it. I bought the Jetson's and it just wasn't | |
