Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Okay, obessesing with minutia; according to The Making of Star Trek (written in 1968 while the show was still in production, and co-written by Roddenberry) Stephen Whitfield writes components of the Enterprise were built in what we call today, the San Francisco Navy Yards, a division of Starfleet, and assembled in space. And as noted above, we never see or hear about this in the series or films. And obviously, many sources are slightly different in how the ship was built, from the Star Trek Encyclopedia, to the Wiki to Star Trek.com. I tend to believe the book, The Making of Star Trek.
Robert April is the first commander, then Captain Christopher Pike and Captain Kirk.
When asked, Orci says that what we see in the teaser won't be in the film.

Actually, in the most recent interview from trekmovie.com (on 1/19) he simply says "no coment."

Just a slight aside--
The Making of Star Trek is an excellent read. I also like the Bjo Trimble Star Trek Concordance (with the episode wheel on the front cover). The material in that one also covers the animateds, which for its time was not all that common.

Chris, I stand corrected, I forget exactly what Orci said.
trekmovie is now reporting that the official site is up and there is a viral site up too with vague images of the new Enterprise under construction. When I have more time, I'll look at it, but it appears to be giving sneak peaks at the new ship.
Star Trek :: The Official Movie Site :: In Theaters December 25, 2008
And the viral site can be found by clicking the red glowing dot there.

Further to Nelson's post on the viral site - to access go to the official Star Trek site and click on the red button that appears to the right of Under Construction.
Or go directly to this link - NCC-1701
There are 4 webcams showing the ongoing construction of the Enterprise from various angles. Only three seem to be active right now. Here are their settings if you don’t want to fool around:
CAM 1: 564, CAM 2: 125, CAM 3: 955, CAM 4: 289
Pretty cool!

Thanks Lou, I didn't have enough time to add all that detail for the viral site. As you probably know from trekmovie, they've got screen graps of the viral site and the hidden shot of a corridor.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
This is the corridor;
The shape is reminiscent of the TMP corridors, much like some of the exterior styling. Those sequential spot lights will probably look cool in the film as well. They were foolish to release the shot so dark IMO, as it looks for too much like BSG corridors here and I don't imagine that's what they're going for.
EDIT: Tried to replace the image with a better one and I'm getting upload errors atm. Oh well.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
How come so many people on the trekmovie forums comment the corridor looks like Battlestar Galactica? I'll have to rewatch an episode to see this.
I'm sure it's dark because it's not fully lit up, seeing it's still under construction. Or it is dark on purpose and to look as far away as it can from TOS.

it's dark because it's a web cam and not a very good feed.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Galactica corridors have a very similar angular, corrugated look. I agree I don't think the trek sets will look that way in the actual film, that's why I thought it short sited of them to put out an image so similar to Galactica.
I tried to find a good pic to compare to but couldn't, what I did find was some concept art for the failed Tom DeSanto galactica reboot from years ago. I'm thinking of posting this in the trekmovie.com forums and telling them it's production art for the new Trek bridge, that would be fun.

Wow. That teaser looks fantastic. Yep, just watched it now. Call me even more excited. I hope the film is as cool as that teaser. Wouldn't it be interesting if this film actually made it cool to be an extreme trekkie?
