Honestly though Transformers is a pretty mediocre movie. It makes Armageddon seem like a character driven drama by comparison.
The novelty of being the first film that really did giant robots on-screen really carried that film and created a wow-factor to it as people started seeing the robots in motion for the first time.
CGI is not, however going to help them all that much in a Star Trek film. I'm still curious as to what the "angle" here is. Star Trek has always been fairly serious so a reboot ala Casino Royale or Batman Begins doesn't really work. I guess they are going to pump up the action and romance maybe and lean on the younger cast bringing in teenagers perhaps.

Where are you all seeing all these pics of the new Enterprise. I only see 1, clicked the links, and you don't even see the warp nacelles in that pic.

Really? Because I don't see it. I see the saucer section and on the left, something that could be the nacelle, but if it is, it looks to big around and to make it harder to see, it looks like lights are reflecting off the surface. Don't see the right one. Only what looks like beams from the space dock.

From what I read. The ship is not built in space..But in San Francisco. Don't ask me specifics.
Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

Don't get me wrong, there were a few Trekkies there, I was one of them, but for the most part my audience could care less about a Star Trek movie.

I just got back from a packed house, biggest screen in the multiplex showing of "Cloverfield". Great, enthusiastic crowd for the main picture but this trailer was met with a resounding silence. Not outright bitterness, more like they didn't know what to do with it. That said, I do think it will be effective at bringing in the casual fans. My date used to be a big Trekkie, but she thought "Trek" was dead after Enterprise got cancelled. Watching her dawning realization that this montage of historical space-related sound bytes was a trailer for a new Star Trek movie was one of the highlights of my night (and I thought the feature was fantastic!)

Here you Qui-Gon, I brightened up the image for you. Can you see the nacelles now? I don't think they look too big, I think it's more of the camera angle, zoomed in making the field of view smaller.
It is also definitely not being built in space because in the teaser there are men working on it without space suites on. So, unless they have also developed a way to breath in the vacuum of space, this is being built somewhere there is an atmosphere.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
My theatre did pretty much the opposite of Adams. I heard a few 'hoots' when the familiar Star Trek theme music started coming out of the speakers. But then 'that sucked' for the feature (Cloverfield).
I'm looking forward to this one. I was never a ST fan. The only movie I really liked of the original cast was number IV. Never watched any of the series either so perhaps going in fresh, starting fresh will be a good match.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
The teaser depicts the Enterprise under construction in San Francisco Shipyards. The first film, Star Trek The Motion Picture and later films may show the Enterprise being refit in Space Dock, but it was originally constructed on Earth. The dedication plaque on the bridge of the original Enterprise says: San Francisco, CA IIRC.
This may never have been shown on screen, but it is in writing.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Chris, that's a little clearer, yes. I just thought there were other pics floating around where you could see the whole ship from different angles, etc.
No, I don't think they can work in space w/o suits, even in Picard's time.
I always thought the Enterprise could not land, (or take off), from a planet. As I recall, only Voyager ever did that. I always thought it was something about the stress on the pylons holding the saucer and nacelles could not hold up under gravity, or something like that.

Interesting that Nimoy does the "Space: the final frontier..." narration. Then again, since Shatner isn't involved, who else?
