Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
I am getting the vibe that young Hollywood and not so young are pretty much a buzz about the new Star Trek film. Seems they are getting a lot of people you'd think would not want to be in a Trek film, if you get my meaning. I think it's all due to JJ Abrams.
I agree some of the casting here is really oddball. Perhaps Ryder will be a very young Amanda in a flash back sequence.

they never needed to use big star before, because the cast has always been set.

If Nimoy is, as rumored, going to have more than a cameo role as an older Spock, the film may jump to various points in his life. There's plenty of ways they could do this.
Jay's Movie Blog - A movie-viewing diary.
Transplanted Life: Sci-fi soap opera about a man placed in a new body, updated two or three times a week.
Trading Post Inn - Another gender-bending soap, with different collaborators writing different points of view.
"What? Since when was this an energy ball movie?" - Overheard during a screening of Takashi Miike's Dead Or Alive
"What the hell religion are you people?" - Overheard during the Captain Marvel serial at SF/29
"If I feel even one bullet hit me, I will rip your lungs out through your nostrils!" - Ron Silver as himself, "Heat Vision And Jack"

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Some new plot spoilers have apparently been leaked:
Casting-wise, Chris Hemsworth as apparently been cast as George Samuel Kirk, Sr., Jim's father.
Oh, and Jennifer Morrison? She's rumored to be playing Carol Marcus, the mother of Kirk's son from Wrath of Khan.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
I am trying to avoid all the spoilers and potential spoilers even if it's specualtion. Though it's hard to avoid.
I have two issues that have come into my head based on all the bits of input so far.
I think this film could go the way of Superman Returns. The creators all mean very well and are doing their best to keep it real and good and respect what has come. But the new actors, like Routh as Superman, could walk that line of trying to imitate Reeves as Superman and not quite pull it off. They'll try, but it might fall flat. If Routh tried to make it his own, would it have been better, don't know, they chose this route for the character, the Reeve's characteristics.
I know the new actors, Quito particualrly, say they will bring their own stamp to the characters, it will be interesting to see how and if they do it and pull it off.
I am not saying it won't work, I am very open to this new effort. I just have this creeping feeling, it could go either way. All this casting news is great, but it adds to this feeling of Superman Returns kind of vibe. They will be bringing all these characters back, like they did in Superman Returns. It can feel almost off-putting they are cramming all these minor characters we either saw briefly in TOS or just heard mention of in TOS. I know they could be just quick moments. But Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane in SR just destroyed the character for me, or I should say, destroyed what Margot Kidder created.
I am open to new actors, but I have a slight red alert in the back of my mind now.
The second thing on my mind is what the impact of this film can have on the franchise. Using the Superman example again, the point of the movie is to bring in a new generation of fans and hopefully please us older ones. Superman Returns did nothing for me. It was technically head and shoulders above the Reeve films. But SR lacked the heart of the Reeve/Donner film. I can enjoy the Reeve/Donner films over and over. The new SR is only fun to watch if you like the see the cool effects and seemless flying scenes, which are exceptional.
I feel Star Trek 2008 will definitely out-do the effects and look of all past Star Trek efforts and make great HDM show off material! And it will win new fans for sure. But there's that certain chemical make-up that TOS had, it had heart and conviction. So will the new film's gloss seduce you in and make you a fan? If the film is really good, then it should. I fear it could have some discard TOS and possibly some will forget that it started with that. Of course in life, this happens. BUt those in the know, will always respect and remember TOS, Roddenberry and all those that made it. At least I hope so.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Ah, god! Part of my "spoilers" above -- a very important part -- somehow accidentally got deleted as I was getting ready to hit "Post."
The missing section should read:
Kinda vital, wouldn't you agree?
Also:
If Carol Marcus is in the movie, where the hell is Gary Mitchell, BTW? They'd still have been better off introducing certain "supporting" charcters like Uhura and Chekov in the next film, considering all the screen time the existing cast is going to require in order to be developed properly.

This doesn't sound like a reboot/beginning story. It sounds like an episode of The Enterprise.

I heard she was to play Kirk's Mom.
Editted to add this: Some pretty good spy pictures of Quinto as Spock, despite the stupid website watermark.

Given the spoilers above, it is also worth noting that a lot of noise is being made by
Here's hoping this doesn't present a problem. So far the production sounds great.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
The interesting thing about the Quinto photos emerging last night is how they chose to do the make-up. From what can be seen in those photos, I'm glad they took the less is more approach. The later Trek shows like Enterprise chose to use those huge Beatle wigs to make the Vulcan look.
Given Nimoy's involvement and the fact that he's the first actor to create the character, it makes sense to keep the same look. I guess it made sense to use wigs on those shows, not every actor will have the right kind of hair.
