Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
As a new comer to this discussion I like all the new picks. Except for the original TV series I never saw any of the movies (yah I'm one of the old timers).
The new cast makes me want to see the new movie, when it's released.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Thanks Lou for posting that image of the cast, then and now.
I just had a thought, if Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to a planet and leave someone in charge, it used to be Sulu most of the time in the first season. Later it would be Scotty. Can you see Simon Pegg taking command? I have to get the image of Pegg from Hot Fuzz out of my head. So it should stay Sulu as he's a bridge officer.
As for the cast photo, assuming Pine and Urban take the roles, it feels like Battlestar Galactica all over again. Getting used to these new faces. At least the genders and ethnicities are the same, more or less.
Someone mentioned that they wondered if Majel Barrett will return to do the computer voice. I can see no reason why not, other then JJ wanting to recast that part too.

"So what about the beloved spaceship, the Enterprise NCC 1701? Is it going to look like the ship that we remember from the original show and films? Nope. We have been told that the Enterprise has been redesigned. I have not been able to get specific details of how the old and new ship will differ but I have been told by multiple sources including people working on the film that the ship will indeed be different.
I’m a little lost for words, I always expected that the inside of the ship would be redesigned for the new film but that the actual look of ship, the hull, nacelles, saucer would remain intact. This is one report that I hope that we are wrong about but all indications are that we are not."

Yeah, I don't mind some minor exterior tweaks but I'm hoping they limit the changes. The original Enterprise holds up quite well design wise in my opinion.
Interior wise I'm more open to changes though the general design of the Bridge and Engineering should be respected.

Given that J.J. Abrams is a major Star Trek fan, I don't think he's going to make big sweeping changes to the Enterprise or anything else that is a core to the show/movies.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Well, reportedly, Orci, the screenwriter, is the real Trek fan. JJ is a fan, but he's more a Star Wars guy. Orci has been quoted that the design will remain faithful to TOS. That can mean anything though. The overall configuration could be the same with changes to detailing. I hope they leave it very much the same interms of configuration and proportion and just add detailing and refinements.
I've seen some fanboys attempts at CGI, including the kid who was featured in the film Trekkies, who has gone on to doing CGI work for Voyager and Battlestar Galactica and Lost. His design is chunky and too busy, in my opinion. Others have combined features from the film version and TV version with varying degrees. They don't work in my opinion. Simpler and clean was the intent of the original design, the thinking was a space ship would not have anything exposed to the dangers of space.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Anyone think they should redo the interiors to make them more modern? The sets were heavily influenced by the sixties, budget and f/x of the time. I am sure if Gene would have done the show today. The sets would look more like TNG than TOS.
Bring back John Doe! Or at least resolve the cliff-hanger with a 2hr movie or as an extra on a dvd release.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
I think the structure of the interiors should be the same, or nearly the same with added details.
The only significant change I would make is to tone down the colors. The colors were pumped originally up to show off the capabilities of color TV - that is no longer the goal, so loose the colored gels on the lights, and mute the colors a bit (maroon instead of red railings, etc.)
However, you could really tone things down simply by lighting things differently and still largely keep much of the original set colors.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
My only gripe is the casting of Sulu. If I had a choice it would be Jason Kyson Lee from Heroes. He's Korean but at least he can speak Japanese.
Edit: Oh wait, just looked up IMDB and John Cho is Korean too (and just remembered the new Harold and Kumar trailer). Maybe he can be Japanese too.

Sound like we are all on the same page. Keep the exterior design with little change. Update the interior to reflect technological and SFX advances.
