Looks like Karl Urban has been cast as one of, if not the, baddies.

Phew. When I first read this, my wires got crossed and I was picturing Andy Milonakis. I was wondering in what mirror universe he could possibly make a good Bones.

Just announced - Eric Bana cast as the villian 'Nero' in ST11 - Check out the article from StarTrek.com. Not Russell Crowe but not bad either.

Absolutely.
And we may have our new Kirk! Check out the mock up picture. Chris Pine looks good.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Lou, I am not entirely convinced yet that Chris Pine can be the new Kirk. Of course the creative team probably see what they feel is right in him for the role if he's on the list.
Kind of an odd thing these days we are seeing more examples of existing properties where an established character is re-cast as their younger selves. Ewan MacGregor as Obi Wan, Daniel Craig as Bond and now someone will take the Kirk role.
What gets me is that these new films all tend to show them as young and not quite formed yet and they make mistakes and act out of character. For some people, maybe that's okay. But to me it is tedious to have to watch that when we know what the real character is all about.
Hopefull this new Kirk will be Kirk from the start of this film.

There is no real Kirk. He's a fictional character who has had dozens of writers guiding his actions over the years, occasionally in contradictory ways. That these different people can do different things with him at different points in his life, and look at the same basic character and see different things, is a strength, rather than a weakness.

Hey Nelson - I don't know the actor(which is probably good) but he looks the part. As to showing Kirk - or any of the other characters in this movie, except for Spock - some youthful impetuousness is bound to be part and parcel of the movie.
I'm treating this like a TV show pilot. If it accomplishes the job of introducing us to the 'new' characters in an entertaining way then I'll be satisfied. I will have much higher expectations for the second one. Hopefully Nimoy's Spock will make the transition more bearable.

Re: Star Trek XI- Official now- 12.25.2008 (merged)
Jason, I understand your point, you are right that the character of Captain Kirk is a piece of fictional work where many writers have given him the lines to say and the actions to take. But in all these variations, there was always William Shatner there to breath life into the character. He had completed the character by becoming him on film.
It will be admittedly hard to see another person do the role. As long as the basic soul of the character is there and the actor is true to him, then I can accept that.
Yes Lou, you have the right attitude. After seeing so many new actors take over the role of James Bond, it's actually a time when we will see all new actors playing the roles of TOS. Hard to believe it will happen! And I don't mean to sound subborn and unwilling to accept change. I don't know Chris Pine either. If he's good in the role and does his job right, then great!
I will be there with an open mind on opening day.

I'm going to try as well. I know once they start releasing shots of uniforms, props, and ships that my 'openness' will get challenged. Changing actors I can deal with. Changing the look - too much -of the original Star Trek era is going to be tougher for me to deal with.

How about Mark Wahlberg as Captain James T. Dignam?
