Catch and Release - quick review

Picking up the pieces, Gray (Jennifer Garner) faces a different life when her fiance Grady unexpectedly dies, and she inadvertently discovers an unknown side of Grady. Gray is buoyed by Grady's friends, Sam, Fritz and Dennis, as they all acclimate to losing a close friend in their own different ways.

I found the film to be a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, easily worthy of a matinee viewing. Garner provides a winning performance, and the supporting cast is sound. Sam (Kevin Smith) pretty much provides a lot of comic relief, and the script gives us some regular people dealing with tragedy and trying to get back to the business of living. It's a refreshing reprieve to films with dark and twisted casts of characters that exist simply to provide an antagonist in a film. In contrast, this film offers a look at decent characters adjusting to a world without a friend, but also coming to grips with what he left behind in the world.

I give it 2.75 stars, or a grade of B-.

Re: Catch and Release - quick review

I have to disagree. I found the film cliched to the extreme, and just not fun. Kevin Smith was a caricature, and not even a good one. I never bought Garner's romance with her fiance's friend (Olyphant), and the fact that there were no mature men in the movie bothered me. How old are these guys and they're still sitting around with baseball caps, jersey and college kid haircuts?

Sorry, but everything about the movie rang false to me.

I did catch that the one picture of Garner's deceased fiance is Ben Affleck.

Re: Catch and Release - quick review

Haven't seen this yet, but I probably will.

1) It's getting pretty good reviews.
2) A friend of mine started off as an extra in this and wound up filling in for Kevin Smith's double, who failed to show up.

So, I have to go so I can say, "See Kevin Smith in the taxi? That's Troy!"
