Notes on a Scandal - quick review

An older, lonely, high school teacher, Barbara Covett (Judi Dench), befriends a new teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchette), who is married with children. Barbara lives up to her last name. Before you know it, Barbara becomes a confidant of Sheba's, but Sheba has her own scandalous dalliance with a 15 year old at school, and Barbara uses this information to keep Sheba in her good graces for as long as it was tenable.

It sounds like one of those Lifetime movie of the week, and frankly, it ends up like one of them as well, but the performances by Dench and Blanchette elevate the material, which has a few dark laughs at the predicament the characters find themselves in the last act. Dench earns her Best Actress nomination, but Blanchette's character is slightly underwritten, but she does get to light up the screen in the last act of the film. Bill Nighy (playing Sheba's much older husband) also cracked me up in a couple of scenes as things spiral out of control for Sheba with Barbara's persistent presence in their lives.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B (mainly for the acting performances, not the story).

Glad to see Pat also laughing with some of these lines. Dench's juicy role gives her plenty of entertaining lines. I'm not surprised to find out that the writer this movie also wrote Closer, with characters spitting out blunt sexual references or dark, cynical attitudes. Julia Roberts had more blunt dialogue in Closer, but I don't think that picture made her as sexy as this picture did for Blanchett.

There are some moments that are especially well handled, like the flashback sequences with Blanchett and the student or an awkward moment with a wizard hat. But most of the moments are very obvious, but I guess that's part of the fun. Like Closer, the movie doesn't intend to be subtle, people scream at each other and behave in explosive ways. The Phillip Glass score likewise blasts away.

I really liked this movie - Judi Dench's performance was outstanding in it, all around, and she completely deserves that Oscar nomination. I especially liked how her character never became a caricature of herself, and that she managed to still be sympathetic. Despite everything the character did - I felt so sorry for her, and I couldn't help myself.
