Jackass: The Movie (2002)

During my little New Year's party I tried showing clips from various horror films and Franco films but these were freaking a few people out so I put this in, which was my first time viewing anything to do with these guys. It was funny that Franco was freaking some out because this here really freaked me out but it made me laugh. It's hard to believe how stupid these guys are but hey, it has earned them millions so good luck.

Tarzan and the Golden Lion (1927)

Tarzan (James Pierce) and his lion must fight off strangers to the jungle who are searching for diamonds. The stakes are raised when they kidnap his sister(?!). This is a pretty good silent version that never takes itself too seriously. The film only runs 57 minutes and thankfully each minute is full of action and other things to that nature. Pierce is good in the title role and the supporting cast, including Boris Karloff, are good as well. It's interesting to note that Pierce was engaged to Edgar Rice Burrough's daughter at the time this was being made. Burrough's convinced Pierce to turn down the Gary Cooper role in Wings to do this film. You gotta wonder what the two men talked about after Wings went on to do everything it did.

Dreams of a Country Girl (1996)

Yet another Joe D'Amato "adult" film, this time, as the title says, a country girl has dreams about sex. The less said the better.

Name Unknown (1964)

Educational short has a judge talking about delinquent teens and how one bad turn can lead to trouble. This is one of those stupid "warning" films but sadly this one really isn't too over the top so there's no added laughs. This is a decently made short but even the best made shorts like this are pretty boring. For any parents reading this, make sure you kids don't get into any convertibles because only sex maniacs drive these cars.

Going Steady? (1951)

Jeff and Marie are going steady but they didn't even know it so they ask their parents about the pros and cons of staying with one person. Here's another educational shorts and again, it's really played straight so it's more boring when an over the top film could have at least given some laughs. The incredibly bad acting gets a few laughs.

Getting Along with Parents (1953)

Extremely lazy educational short explains why some parents won't let their teens do anything they want when it comes to spending money. Horrible acting, silly stories and just an all around bad film.

Body Care and Grooming (1946)

Another educational short, this one dealing with college kids and how they should keep their bodies clean. There are a few funny moments and this here comes off interesting whereas the others have been pretty boring. Did you know in 1946 it was thought that you should only wash your hair once every two weeks? Yeah.

Arthur - 7 of 10

A very funny, sweet and touching film. All the principal roles, Dudley Moore, John Gielgud and Liza Minnelli are excellent and the chemistry between Moore and Minnelli is charming.

Marathon Man - Pretty great thriller from John Schlesinger. It grabbed me right from the opening minute. Apart from a couple of slow spots and what I thought were a few loose ends, it kept ahold of me all the way. Well, that car accident at the beginning was a bit silly and contrived, but I forgave it that. The dental scene was effective, not necessarily with the actual torture scenes themselves, but with the slow lead up to them ("Is it safe?", "Is it safe?", etc.) and then returning to that same room after you think he has escaped.

Gosford Park - Highly enjoyable ensemble work by Altman focuses on the upstairs/downstairs characters during a weekend at an estate during the early 30s. It didn't necessarily have the sublety to effectively bring across issues with class distinction or the broad comedy to make a mockery of it all, but I was supremely entertained by the cast and their characters. Altman has his typically roving camera at work moving through several conversations to really give you the feeling you're part of the whole affair.

01/03 White Wilderness (1958) (of 5)
Aside from the controversial lemming sequence, this is an enormously entertaining film in the Disney True Life Adventures series. Rarely a dull moment, and though some might say the narration and music date the film (I find it all charming), the stunning photography holds up as well as any nature doc of today.

Die Mommie Die!

Supposedly an homage to the soapy melodramas of the 1960's. Most likely I just haven't seen enough of the films this one is trying to spoof to appreciate it. It seemed competently done, but most of it probably just went over my head.

Deerslayer (1920)
I don't really have all that much to say about this german silent film, which I found to be a major chore to endure. The only reason I purchased it (as a cheap DVD from Alpha) was to get to see an early performance by Bela Lugosi as an Indian named Chingachgook. The film remains noteworthy only for Bela's appearance, and is otherwise best forgotten. Unfortunately, the actor is not prominently featured.

Night Into Morning (1951)
Having enjoyed Ray Milland in a few films lately, I settled down to watch this one on the TCM channel. It sounded interesting enough, more or less with Milland reprising his Lost Weekend routine, so I wanted to check it out. It's a very typical drama about a professor who mourns the accidental death of his wife and 10-year-old boy, and instead of adequately grieving over the loss, takes to the bottle and becomes an alcoholic. His two good friends who care about him constantly try to set him on the straight and narrow path. I found this to be pretty standard, with a plot that really doesn't go very far. What set it above average was the good performance from Milland as well as Nancy Davis (Reagan) as one of the friends who's devoted to him and can relate, having lost a spouse herself.

I liked the scenery and I liked the overall tone. The rest:

Stephen Tobolowsky's Birthday

Recognizable character actor Stephen Tobolowsky (the guy who tries to sell Bill Murray insurance in Groundhog Day - "Am I right or am I right?") shares about 90 minutes of storytelling and anecdotes with the camera and some friends at his birthday party. That's it. But it's mostly quite interesting and fun to hear this accomplished raconteur work through these events of his life. It wasn't quite as spellbinding as I'd hoped from a few reviews I read though. Mostly due, I think, to a few stories being overly rehearsed and also from the total lack of back and forth with his guests. Had it been more spontaneous and truly a party atmosphere, it would've been even better.

Little Dieter Needs To Fly

Werner Herzog's documentary of the experiences Dieter Dengler faced after being captured during the Vietnam War. They retrace much of his capture and escape in the actual locations in Laos. The harrowing tales he describes will send shivers to pretty much any part of your body that can shiver. The contrast between the ability of humans to inflict pain and suffering and the ability of humanity to survive and withstand it is truly remarkable.

title: zatoichi: the blind swordsman (1989)
rating: c
comments: i believe this is the same actor who did the older black and white ones that i've seen. he is absolutely charming in his mannerisms and just a kick to watch. unfortunately, this movie just felt off. the story was ragged and a bizarre 80's-style theme song totally threw me out of the pic. pretty awesome finale though.
