Looks like no thread for only 2007 releases yet, so, reserving a spot...

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2007)

JANUARY 2007

title: little miss sunshine
rating: b
comments: a charming movie, but i can see it not being for everyone. i loved the subtle performances by everyone. the movie takes a turn for the worse in the last third, but it's still entertaining to watch. i actually caught myself curling my toes, which tells me how into it i got.

title: fearless (unrated version)
rating: c
comments: apparently this is li's last martial arts flick. too bad it's not one i feel he should be remembered for. as usual the fighting is excellent, the cg and wire-work well done (it only pulled me out of the pic a couple of times) ... but the story was standard fare and the pacing ... i dunno ... just felt "off" for some reason.

title: zatoichi: the blind swordsman (1989)
rating: c
comments: i believe this is the same actor who did the older black and white ones that i've seen. he is absolutely charming in his mannerisms and just a kick to watch. unfortunately, this movie just felt off. the story was ragged and a bizarre 80's-style theme song totally threw me out of the pic. pretty awesome finale though.

title: brick
rating: b
comments: heathers meets sam spade meets modern day teen angst ... or something like that. in any case, i can definitely say it's a refreshing take on high scool life, with a credible modern day "vibe" thrown in. a bit over the top and stylized for it's own good ... but i enjoyed it quite a bit.

title: the andromeda strain
rating: b
comments: for a 35 year old movie, this one definitely held up. i was duly impressed by the production value and the techno-babble-science stuff.

title: the natural
rating: b
comments: entertaining movie. unfortunately, it didn't quite blow me away like i thought it would but that's probably due to me not being a huge sports fan. i didn't realize levinson directed this ... just makes me like his stuff even more.

title: close encounters of the third kind (director's cut?)
rating: a
comments: i think this was a remastered or recut version. the pic quality was way above what i remember (even for a film based hd signal) and i think it had a couple of scenes i don't remember. in any case, this movie never fails to make me smile. the effects were standout for the time and the story leads to a very satisfying finale.

title: children of men
rating: b
comments: a decent flick, but i felt it bogged down in places. but the amazing (and scary) vision of the future, the worthy performance by clive owen, and the neat-o tracking shot near the end helped keep me entertained.

title: a scanner darkly
rating: b
comments: i almost appreciated this more as an art project then a film. the animation style worked for me, but everything else was just so-so. not horrible ... just not fantastic.

title: pan's labyrinth
rating: a
comments: what a refreshing take on the genre. not a fairy-tale story for kids, but one that sticks with you (i'm still thinking about some of the images i saw). a great performance by the young lead actress too.

title: the night listener
rating: d
comments: this one just didn't work for me. i never bought the premise (yeah, i know it's "inspired" by true events), never cared much for any of the characters and just couldn't get into it. it just felt too artificial.

title: haven
rating: c
comments: i don't know if this is how cayman island local folks behave, but i found it a bit far-fetched. yet, the movie somehow kept my interest ... possibly some nice visuals, decent acting and an evocative mood helped.

title: the illusionist
rating: c
comments: a pretty good movie. loved the sepia look and the camera "flicker" effect on some shots. but, if i break the movie down into it's chunks, it just doesn't hold up too well. the ending caught my surprise, but the requisite what-really-happened-montage felt like it was shoved down my throat ... i think a little more subtetly would have gone a long way.

title: the sentinel
rating: c
comments: standard fare and pretty much what i expected. nothing to really set this apart, but enjoyable to watch. note: there is a scene near the very end that was so ridiculously stupid it took me *completely* out of the movie. it irritated me so much i almost knocked this rating down a grade.

title: quinceanera
rating: c
comments: taken apart, this movie doesn't hold up very well; average acting, seen-it-before story, low production value. but this movie had heart and i appreciated the effort put forth.

FEBRUARY 2007

title: transamerica
rating: b
comments: if it wasn't for huffman's performance, i think i would have rated this a c. she made it almost ... mesmerizing to watch. as for the road trip part of the movie ... nothing really special ... but i was entertained.

title: lawrence of arabia
rating: a
comments: wow, i really liked this movie. when i think of what it must have taken to create this, it just blows me away. i kept thinking of "slow and steadY" while watching it. i think it will be interesting when i get around to watching "venus" ... to see peter in one of his first roles and one of his last.

title: city slickers
rating: a
comments: haven't seen this in years so i pretty much forgot most of it. it was a nice revisit. i was surprised how the movie was so good at balancing drama and comedy ... they hit all the notes perfectly. being about their age (in the movie) i felt i related to more stuff now then the first time i watched it as a youngin'

title: the devil's backbone
rating: b
comments: i guess i'm becoming a fan of this director. he kind of strikes me as a spanish version of m. night shy-however-you-spell-it ... but better. i had no idea what this was about, but i enjoyed the ride. this movie is another good example of what talented child actors can do. i also really enjoyed the production value ... great set design.

title: dragon tiger gate
rating: a
comments: if you like kung fu, cgi and wirework ... this is *the* movie for you. think serious version of kung fu hustle. based purely as a fighting movie, i haven't seen one this entertaining in quite some time. honestly, i can forgive the rest of the hokey plot ... yes ... the action is that good.

title: world trade center
rating: b
comments: a pretty good movie, but it didn't blow me away. honestly, it felt like a run-of-the-mill drama. if it wasn't for the uniformly good acting, i think i would have given this a C.

title: in her shoes
rating: b
comments: wow, i'm surprised how much i liked this. colette is one of my all-time fave actresses, so i knew that was a safe bet ... but kudos to diaz who really won me over. and mcclaine, she can do so much with just a look.

title: the departed
rating: b
comments: normally i never seem to agree with hollywood. movies they think are amazing just don't blow me away ... but this one i liked. i thought all the leads were excellent and the pacing just perfect. i still prefer infernal affairs better ... but that's just the asian in me representing!

title: star wars (ep 4)
rating: a
comments: it's been ages since i watched this from start to finish. even though i virtually have every line and scene memorized, i was still thoroughly entertained. honestly, what is it about this franchise that is so endearing?

MARCH 2007

title: killzone
rating: b
comments: aka "spl". an entertaining chinese kung-fu police story. a little less drama and more arse-kicking would have been nice, but i wasn't bored. it was good to see sammo hung back in action too.

title: zodiac
rating: b
comments: not what i originally expected, but i wasn't disappointed. the high production value and attention to detail really impressed me. i got the same "i'm really there" vibe like i did from watching good night and good luck.

title: children of heaven
rating: b
comments: the word "charming" definitely comes to mind when watching this. charming acting from the children, charming musical score, charming cinematography ... yup ... definitely a charming flick.

title: breakfast at tiffany's
rating: b
comments: i think this is my first experience with hepburn. while her acting may not have blown me away, i was floored by her looks. she truly is a classic beauty. the movie, as a whole, works very well. i smiled a lot, laughed a few times, and just enjoyed myself.

title: 300
rating: b
comments: it was pretty much what i expected, but i liked it more then i thought i would. this is probably the most "juicy" (meaning bloody) movie i've seen in a long time. the fast/slo/zoom effect was really neat to see ... almost as innovative as matrix's bullet-time thing.

title: spring, summer, winter, fall, and spring
rating: a
comments: first rate movie, with beautiful cinematography, strong acting and a wonderful story. the stages of life compared to the seasons of the year seemed hokey to me, but after watching it, it worked out beautifully.

title: flushed away
rating: c
comments: nothing really new, but still entertaining to watch. the voice acting was average and the story *very* predictable. cgi claymation ... who knew!

title: casino royale
rating: b
comments: i'm liking the new bond. hopefully this more straight-forward serious-ish bond will take the franchise in a much-needed new direction.

APRIL 2007

title: stranger then fiction
rating: a
comments: i almost gave this a b, but decided i liked it more then that. hands down, my favorite will ferrel performance, which is saying something cuz i pretty much don't like the guy. i loved emma thompson's quirkiness. i loved maggie's performance as well. visually and story-wise, very fresh. just a great flick all around.

title: grindhouse
rating: b
comments: this is definitely a "fun" movie. there are so many nice touches that really make you feel you're at some cheesy double-feature. both vignettes stand on their own; the first one was definitely more on the gore side, the second more on the talky side. in a weird way, i actually felt "refreshed" when i walked out.

title: the prestige
rating: c
comments: i guess for a rental this way okay, but there wasn't really anything that blew me away. i had the secret figured out way too early. from a production standpoint, nothing to really blow me away. but, i did find it a decent character study in jealousy and obsession.

title: pulp fiction
rating: a
comments: gawd, i forgot how much i enjoyed this movie. i just love the scene where mia wallace gets the adrenaline shot. and the dialog in this movie is just perfect.

title: tremors
rating: a
comments: i've seen this movie many times and it never fails to entertain. bacon and ward give pitch-perfect performances as maybe-smarter-then-you-think hillbillies and the supporting cast is just outstanding. probably one of the best b-movies ever!

title: doom
rating: b
comments: this one surprised me. i didn't go in expecting much, but was thoroughly entertained. some nice action, good effects and production value ... and the rock! how can ya go wrong?

title: reservoir dogs
rating: a
comments: watched the anniversary edition dvd. much better video and audio. as for the movie, not much to say except it's been a while, and i enjoyed revisiting it. as usual, quentin's dialog is just so fresh ... i absolutely love "the commode story" sequence.

title: ice age: the meltdown
rating: c
comments: definitely not as good as the first one. while the voice acting was uniformly good, the story felt "disjointed", with musical scenes that seemed superflous. it was a smart move to disperse that acorn-seeking guy throughout the movie instead of just at the beginning.

title: marathon man
rating: b
comments: having seen "the kid stays in the picture", it was neat to see another evans produced flick. i'm also not very familiar with hoffman's earlier works, so that was good to see too. as for story, i was thoroughly engaged. and now, i get what people are talking about when they mention the dentist chair scene. ouch ....

title: hoosiers
rating: b
comments: almost gave this an A, i enjoyed it so much. it's rare for me to forget i'm watching an actor (think tom cruise), but in this case, i forgot it was hackman ... i thought i was watching a real coach. that says something about how good i thought his performance was. special kudos for the score too ... which stood out for some reason. the rest of the movie was pretty standard sports-fare, but it feels like it was before all the cliche's set in.

title: the breakfast club
rating: a
comments: maybe i'm just waxing nostalgic (this came out when i was in high school), but this movie gets everything just right. the humor, the dialog ... this movie gets teen angst better then any i can think of.

title: mr. nice guy
rating: b
comments: a horribly cheesy, but very entertaining jackie chan flick. i'm not real familiar with his work, but this one had some really innovative use of props. the acting was beyond bad ... but who cares. chan is so likeable on screen, and watching him do his own stunts just adds.

title: the cutting edge: the magic of movie editing
rating: b
comments: nice documentary about the role of the editor. it was interesting to hear comments by some heavy hitters in the biz (spieldberg, scorsese, tarantino, etc) about their thought processes behind editing; why it works, what kind of effect it can produce, etc.

title: play it again, sam
rating: b
comments: i'm just a sucker for woody-ism's ... and this one had plenty. lots of good humor and decent acting. i'm not familiar with a lot of keaton's early work, so that was good to see too.

title: all the presidents men
rating: b
comments: since i never knew much about the whole watergate thing, i found this docudrama quite interesting. was neat to see a young hoffman (again, after marathon man) and younger redford too.

MAY 2007

title: firefox
rating: d
comments: boy, this one didn't hold up too well ... i remember enjoying it much more as a kid. weak story, horrible stereo-types, russians speaking in english, cheesy effects. only the always awesome eastwood saves the day here.

title: cherish
rating: b
comments: really, this movie should be a C, but it had a lot of heart and i found its charm just too compelling. tunney and nelson have a lot of chemistry ... i would have liked to see just a tad more of that and a tad less of the i'm-trying-too-hard-to-be-quirky stuff.

title: spiderman 3
rating: b
comments: pretty much what i expected. while i felt the pacing was a touch off and the story faltered in parts, the pop-corn factor was on full-tilt. i really appreciated the message at the end ... i was glad my kids got to soak that in.

title: american graffiti
rating: b
comments: i've seen bits and parts, but never the entire movie in one viewing. it does a wonderful job capturing that youthful excitement and innocence ... i especially loved the segments involving the geeky guy with glasses.

title: time of favor
rating: f
comments: apparantly, this movie won six israeli oscars, but it just didn't work for me. i suspect part of it may be my lack of understanding of the political/religious implications. even that aside, i just found the story boring and the acting quite stiff. honestly, i had to force myself to finish this.

title: music and lyrics
rating: b
comments: sometimes i think it's good to stop thinking too hard about a movie (in a critical way) and just decide if you had a good time. this is a perfect example. on it's own, the movie isn't all that great, but i found myself smiling and laughing out loud quite a few times.

title: suspiscion
rating: a
comments: i really liked this one. it was neat to see grant in a "sinister" role and it kept me guessing all the way to the end. i also enjoyed how this was shot more straightforward ... not so hitch-cocky-ish. i think this is my first viewing of joan fontaine too ... i thought she was great.

title: desert punk
rating: b
comments: not sure if it's fair to include anime series in this thread, but considering this is a 6-dvd set, i sure put in the time. the animation on this was excellent, the english dubbing/translation above average, it had a creative storyline, and the not-so-subtle breast jokes were hilarious.

title: catch and release (edited)
rating: c
comments: edited as i saw this on an airplane. it wasn't horrible, but pretty much by-the-book (i literally guessed some of the dialog ... to the word). it was neat to see olephant (? the guy from deadwood) in a different role. but the story just didn't work ... and the supporting actors felt forced ... especially the (usually at least interesting to watch) juliette lewis.

title: looking for comedy in the muslim world
rating: d
comments: i almost always get a kick out of brooks ... love his dry sense of humor. but this movie just seemed "odd" in a can't-really-describe kind of way. there were a few moments were i laughed out loud -- but the movie, for the most part, was just .... flat.

JUNE 2007

title: knocked up
rating: b
comments: another solid flick. the characters are all so loveable, the comedy is so over-the-top ... gotta love it. this one didn't have quite the "impact" that 40-year old virgin did, but i still laughed quite a bit.

title: dracula (1931)
rating: b
comments: i can't think of too many movies i've seen from this period, but this was certainly entertaining to watch. it sure seems campy now, but i can see how it must have blown audiences away back in the day. i just loved those bela lugosi stares ... awesome.

title: oceans 13
rating: c
comments: i was never a huge fan of this series (and i pretty much hate the director), but this one kept me entertained enough. the unbelievability factor is crazy high, but the leads do a good job of keeping us entertained.

JULY 2007

title: transformers
rating: b
comments: exactly what i expected -- lots of kick ass fluff! some of the best effects i've seen in a while ... the last time i was that blown away was when i saw jurassic park. heck, even the throw away story and actors (although the young leads weren't bad) weren't horrible.

AUGUST 2007

title: the host
rating: b
comments: pretty entertaining action/monster flick. i found the lead characters endearing, complete with believable quirks and flaws. the monster looked a bit too cgi-ish, but it didn't bother me that much. definitely worth watching!

title: the bourne ultimatum
rating: b
comments: i enjoyed this so much, i almost gave it an A. i distinctly remember how much i enjoyed the second one and hearing it's the same director ... i was anxious to see this one. i was not disappointed. what really impressed me was the pacing ... i wish all action movies were like this. it was perfect. damon does a great job, the story is decent enough, the stunts and fighting impressive ... all in all a very good ride.

title: the last kiss
rating: c
comments: pretty much a by-the-book movie. zach is always charming to watch, but there wasn't really anything innovative or different about this movie. it wasn't horrible and fine for cable, but i would say garden state is a better effort.

title: night at the museum
rating: c
comments: a solid c. not the worst movie i've seen, but there was nothing special (story, fx, acting) to push it above the ordinary. it made for a decent rental though.

title: borat
rating: c
comments: well, i guess i was expeecting more, what with all the buzz and stuff. there was a few moments of "oh my gawd" hilarity and a few moments of stupidity (not in a good way) ... but overall i didn't think it was all that. i'm glad i didn't pay to watch it.

title: bridge to terabithia
rating: c
comments: this movie just didn't quite work for me. they came close to capturing the magic of childhood ... but it just felt forced to me. the acting was okay, the story was okay, the effects were okay .... i dunno ... i guess i thought this movie was just .... okay.

title: smokin' aces
rating: b
comments: there wasn't anything i haven't seen before, but it was well executed. i did think the build-up to the hotel raid was nicely paced and edited and the motely cast of characters (while stereotypical) were still interesting to watch. piven does a pretty good job too. oh yeah ... what was up with karate kid jr?

SEPTEMBER 2007

title: hot fuzz
rating: c
comments: i enjoyed this okay, but i found it a bit long and tiresome. i think part of my enjoyment stemmed from the people i watched it with ... their laughter was infectious. it had a few original jokes and the chemistry between the leads was just as enjoyable as their previous work ... but i'm not sure it deserved all the praise it received.

title: the lookout
rating: a
comments: i thoroughly enjoyed this movie. i thought the script and acting were top notch - i especially enjoyed the lead roles (bridges' was great). the movie was well paced with a great finale. i thought the lead guy was menacingly wonderful. definitely check this out if you can.

title: wild hogs
rating: d
comments: ugh ... i think i laughed out loud twice ... maybe three times. but, my wife loved it and i enjoyed hearing her laugh. that's about all i can about this movie.

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2007)

I don't have any films to watched yet, but as it's a New Year, I'm wiping clean the slate of my ignore list. Of course it won't be long til someone ends up there for 2007.

"Movies should be like amusement parks. People should go to them to have fun." - Billy Wilder

"Subtitles good. Hollywood bad." - Tarzan, Sight & Sound 2012 voter.

"My films are not slices of life, they are pieces of cake." - Alfred Hitchcock

"My great humility is just one of the many reasons that I am vastly superior to everyone else." - Ramrod Clerk

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2007)

As I had a difficult time accessing the pages in the 06 thread, I will not be keeping a list for this 07 thread. However, I have a suggestion to the members who often post in these threads: why not post your thoughts on current films in the discussion threads?

This type of "tracking" thread is really useful to discuss older films and help oneself keep track of films he or she has seen. But, as I read through the 06 thread currently, there are a whole bunch of Rocky Balboa posts in it, whereas the actual Rocky thread has little discussion. Having a gathering place on thoughts on a film would seem to promote more discussion, and would not require cross referencing if one wishes to respond to a poster in the "track" thread regarding a specific newly released film.
