For example, I don't recall the main theme, YOU KNOW MY NAME, which is a good song, reappearing anywhere else in the picture after the opening credits. If it did, it was so subtle you didn't know it, and Barry's Bond music was not subtle. I loved that about it.

As Chris mentioned, it does reappear throughout the movie. I thought it was a very nice touch since it recalled how the Barry scores used their themes. Actually, it's use in the movie was probably the only reason I like the song. I felt the instrumental version was rich and sounded rather nice and eventually started to like the song.

Re: *** Official CASINO ROYALE Discussion Thread
I think the best recent example of recurring use of the main title theme throughout the movie is Tomorrow Never Dies. In that one, Arnold made liberal (and effective) use of the main theme all the way through the film. One of my favorite Bond scores (and movies).

I thought it was littered through the film. I'd only heard the song once before, a few months ago, and completely forgotten it by the time I saw the film. But I walked out of the film with the song on my brain, simply because the score did keep reinforcing it.
In general, I agree about the holding back of the Bond theme. But I think it is much like the holding back of the gunbarrel sequence - it was right for this film because of its "origin story" nature. You've got to remember that David Arnold is not a random composer who treats this as another job. He genuinely loves the Bond films - he made that "Shaken and Stirred" album back in the mid-90s, which I thought had some really great parts to it. And I seem to remember seeing something on the TND disc where he talks about the carpark scene, and the way he tries to time and use the Bond theme for maximum effect. So it's not like he's trying to avoid the theme.
Personally, I think Arnold is the nearest the Bond films have had to a Barry in quite a long time, and I'm glad he seems to be the composer-in-residence for the series.

Re: *** Official CASINO ROYALE Discussion Thread
I've seen many James Bond films recently and I've thought long and hard about this. Whoever it is, the villain of the next one needs to wear a Nehru jacket. It's the only fashionable way to try to rule the world.

Re: *** Official CASINO ROYALE Discussion Thread
I'll be honest - I had never heard of a Nehru jacket before. So I looked it up in Wikipedia, and discovered that's the name of the jacket that Blofeld (and Dr Evil) wore. Interesting. I agree - it is a very cool style. But anyone wearing that style is just going to call for comparisons with Blofeld, and there is no-one that can stand up under that type of comparison.

Re: *** Official CASINO ROYALE Discussion Thread
I was sort of kidding with that comment, but it would be pretty cool. While Blofeld is famed for wearing it, if you look at the movies, it's a staple of the Bond villain. Dr. No, Blofeld, Drax, Kamal Khan & henchman, and Elliot Carver. All different styles. A good costume designer can pull off the tribute without it being glaringly obvious.

Re: *** Official CASINO ROYALE Discussion Thread
Man, this movie has legs. I am seeing it a second time with my wife since she missed it when I first saw it a month ago. We are seeing it at a mainline theater, too, not some second run place.
After watching this I got into a Bond kick and watched a bunch of the old movies over the holidays (thanks, Spike!). Having never seen "On Her Majesties Secret Service" (for decades I was told it was horrible, boring, etc.) I wanted to see it now because so many compared it to Bond's current outing. I have to say, the comparisons are apt! I enjoyed the hell out of that old movie and it blows away and Moore Bonds and holds up nicely to Connery's. It actually felt like a spy movie, which the early Bond movies really did go for. Less about gadgets and more about sneaking around, deciphering clues, making contacts, infiltration but then enough explosions and shoot outs to make it work. Lazenby, while not as magnetic as Craig or Connery, proved to be a very convincing and serious Bond. Less wit but more drive and he seemed to take the job seriously. Too bad he didn't come back.
Anyway, can't wait to see it again! Any word on the next one? Brand new movie or again going back to the original books for inspiration? They have filmed all of them, right (original ones, anyway). Will SMERSH or SPECTRE make an appearance, as suggested in CASINO? One can only hope.

Phil:
OHMSS is not only a good Bond film, but it's a fine film in its own right. The only Bond film I enjoy more is From Russia With Love. Glad you are yet another viewer that is discovering OHMSS.

They're still talking about an original story for the next one. Then again, Kevin McClory just died in November, so maybe they'll change their minds and work out something for SPECTRE. Personally, I'd prefer fresh adaptations of the books, since they ignored most of them the first time around anyway (a real adaptation of Moonraker would be great)
Apparently, the writers, Pervis and Wade, have been booted out, and they're having trouble finding a director for the next one...
