Re: *** Official The Departed Discussion Thread

Scorsese says in the deleted scene introductions:
Spoiler:
He's not sure if Delahunt (the character who dies from the bullet wound on the couch) is actually a police mole or not --- its simply up to the viewer decide. He did, on the other hand, enjoy how the humanity of the character came out as he wondered out loud why he couldn't inform the gang of who the mole really was...

That's why we're discussing it.

Re: *** Official The Departed Discussion Thread

It does show how ridiculous the use of the word became when you watch that clip.

At first, I thought that Delahunt was a second mole in Costello's gang. Upon reflection, I do not think he was. My reasoning is the photo of Delahunt displayed during the newscast. If Delahunt really was a cop the photo would have showed him in full dress blues. However, the photo shows him dressed casually with his shirt unbuttoned at the neck. What Police organization paying tribute to a fallen comrade would release a photo of him dressed like that? None.

Or else the photo wasn't supplied by the police. Were they ready to admit his role yet, so shortly after he was found dead? (And with a second mole still in position.)

Re: *** Official The Departed Discussion Thread

AF=fter seeing The Departed last night, I'm left with a few questions. I didn't see these commented on in the first five pages of the thread; forgive me if they were hit in the later conversation.

- Why wasn't Sullivan's life-long involvement with Costello known? Queenan and Dignam knew everything about Castigan's life, so they could do their homework. And they had another cop working with Costello and had been watching him for years. But they had no idea Sullivan worked for him?

- Why didn't they followup on the Cell phone monitoring during the microchip raid and discover Sullivan had messaged Costello?

- Why didn't anyone notice that Costello was living far beyond his means, and wonder where the money came from? This is a singular key for identifying a mole: inexplicable cash.

- Who did that horrid cover of "Comfortably Numb"? That jarred me out of its scene.

This was a strong movie. Dicaprio and Damon were superb. But some minor details perplexed me.

Hilarious. I watched "The Departed" last night & thought the language was ridiculous. Can't scriptwriters be any more creative than this? It really was rather pathetic.

Enjoyable movie. I don't know if I consider it Scorcese's best, but it was fun.

As to the cover of Comfortably Numb, it was covered by Rogers Waters, Van Morrison and The Band !!! Maybe this was from that charity re-recording of the Wall from a few years ago. I never bought that, but I remember it was released.

It was from "The Wall: Live in Berlin" Waters staged a performace of "The Wall" there after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

I can't see where anyone has mentioned this yet, so I'm gonna.

Did anyone catch what Madolyn says to Castigan at their final meeting? She says she has something to tell him, to which he says "You can tell me in 2 weeks, if you still want to."(Paraphrased) The next scene is where she tells Sullivan about the baby.

If that doesn't prove the baby is Castigans, it at least proves she thought it might be.

(edit) ok. Prove is a strong word. Heavily Suggest?

Or... she wanted to tell him she was carrying Sullivan's baby now, so the affair was over.
It doesn't "prove" very much.

Maybe Sullivan kept it quiet. Just because the police dept might have some sturdy files about your relatives and your school records doesn't mean they know who you may have been doing odd jobs for in secret.

Does the FBI handle text messages too?
