La Moustache
The film starts with a French man Marc Thiriez (Vincent Lindon) in his home with his wife Agnes (Emmanuelle Devos) contemplating the removal of his mustache.
As Agnes steps out for a bit, Marc decides to do it and removes his mustache. Awaiting her remarks as she steps back in to see what is delaying him he is disappointed to find that she didn’t even notice.
He begins slowly with little hints that he figures will get her to notice but they don’t. He bluntly asks her if she notices anything different about him and she says no. He starts believing that she is just playing with him as they go over to friends of theirs where he is sure someone will notice. Unfortunately no one does.
Pissed that this charade has gone on for far too long he grabs his wife’s hand and forces her to feel his upper lip. Frankly, she begins to believe he is crazy as she mentions that he hasn’t had a mustache for a number of years.
From here, he tries to find evidence and people who can confirm that he did recently have a mustache.
Is it all in his head or is his wife playing with his mind with help from their friends? The answer is never fully resolved but leaves for plenty of thought.
I actually started thinking it was headed in the direction of the Game with Michael Douglas for a while but that faded away then I even went as far as that Star Trek episode with the different Spock and Kirk but that went away to where I’m left with a combination of scrambled ideas.
Both Vincent Lindon and Emmanuelle Devos are quite something to look at and deliver their lines well but the story starts going a little weird in later parts where I would have preferred a little more clarity.
Subtitles never approached a speed where I felt a radar gun was required.
This wasn’t great by any stretch but worth a viewing to see if you can figure it out.
