Re: Oscar Watch 2006
Devil Wears Prada had outstanding dialogue and very well drawn characters. The script was excellent in those respects. If the narrative arc was predictable, well most stories are.

United 93 is a british film? Weird. The AMPAS and BAFTA selection criteria must be quite different, since the film is a BP contender here (and thus considered a domestic picture).
In a global economy where films are often financed by more than one multi-national corporation and sometimes produced accross borders, determining the "nationality" of a picture can be a murky affair, I think.

I don't get this. A film doesn't have to be domestic to be a Best Picture contender. I'm surprised that U93 is a British film too.
(off topic)
While it looks like the Guild thread is abandoned, I've decided to make it into a web page that can just be linked from now on. That way I can revive the old posts too as web pages (now I think I have most of them, dating from 2001, as text files, which I can html'ize). It's not as easy as changing the square brackets to angle brackets though. I have to add paragraphs and breaks and font sizes and whatnot, all in html. I know basic html so that's not a problem other than being tedious. Since I'll be doing the old lists too, I'm looking into style sheets as a way to get them to look uniform. But, oh god I hate style sheets, they're complicated and confusing and hard to learn, they take 3 times or more as much time to implement because you have to do much, MUCH more html than if you'd just done it normally. Every single thing has to have double the html. Intellectually I understand the benefits of style sheets, but emotionally it's like a ton of bricks on my head when I think about actually writing style sheets. The only reason I'm even considering style sheets is that it will, in the end, make everything look better, help with the multiple pages, and make things easier in the future.
I don't expect anyone to want to touch this, but if ANYONE, oh please oh please, has clarity on style sheets and wants to help, I'd be eternally greatful. If you look at the only Guild list that's still accessible at HTF in its entierty, 2006, it'd be a help to know what to put where. My brain is swimming in confusion about classes and spans and ids and divs. I understand most of the very very basic stuff (why linked as opposed to inline, .blah {blah; blah} but I have to figure out what works with what. What gets a div, what gets a class, what gets an id, what gets a span. You wouldn't have to do it, just help me know what to do. Or give me an example with one Guild, and I can use it as a template to do all the Guilds on all the years.
Pretty please, with superfine sugar on top?

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
Any eligible film is eligable for the AMPAS best picture regardless of country of origin. United 93's production companys were based in England (not sure if the studios financing it were american or not) so it's eligable for best British film.
hate to see the guild threads die, they were always so great Vicky! There just less and less interest on this board as we get further away from the three Lord of the Rings movies.

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
Thanks for the clarification wrt to BP noms and country of origin - I don't know what I was thinking. Recent foreign BP noms are Life is beautiful and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and there is probably some british production I am forgetting.

2007 Hollywood Industry Guild Awards
It's not dead! Well, it kinda is, but not really. I've transferred everything over to a web page, and it's all up-to-date, with the following Guild nominations listed:
American Cinema Editors (ACE, The Eddies)
American Society Of Cinematographers (ASC)
Costume Designers Guild (CDG)
Directors Guild (DGA)
Producers Guild (PGA)
Screen Actors Guild (SAG)
Visual Effects Society (VES)
Writers Guild Of America (WGA)
I haven't yet started on the older text files, but I will. I also didn't do the links to IMDB pages. They're useful but they're also very time-consuming to do. I might tweak the colors and such (it looks very 1995, I know) but it's still a good, handy list. I'm not trying to be Sasha Stone (bless her heart).

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
This year there has been a change to how the films in best foreign language film are nominated. In the first phase, all interested countries can submit one film for oscar qualification, this year there were 61. Then a panel of a couple hundred foreign film buffs in the academy takes a few months to view all 61. They fill out voting ballots on the 61 and the top of the herd are collected for the second phase. nine films survived this year. In the second phase, the nine films are screened again, this time for 10 random members of the first panel, plus two ten member foreign film committees (one in NY one in LA). These thirty people determine which of the final five films will be nominated.
The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:
Algeria, “Days of Glory,” Rachid Bouchareb, director
Canada, “Water,” Deepa Mehta, director
Denmark, “After the Wedding,” Susanne Bier, director
France, “Avenue Montaigne,” Daniele Thompson, director
Germany, “The Lives of Others,” Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, director
Mexico, “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, director
The Netherlands, “Black Book,” Paul Verhoeven, director
Spain, “Volver,” Pedro Almodovar, director
Switzerland, “Vitus,” Fredi M. Murer, director
Days of Glory won the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year. Pan's Labyrinth, Volver have a lot of buzz and commercial/critical success in the US (and will likely earn other nominations as well) and Black Book and the Lives of Others have a great deal of critical buzz and momentum, so those five could be considered the frontrunners of these nine. Though Water and After the Wedding both have the best potential to play spoiler for the frontrunners.

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
Yeah, but until they actually fully change the way they select Best Foreign Language Film, then the system is still messed up. I mean, the films are identified by their country, not by the foreign language that is the supposed basis for the nomination.
Thus we get the absurd situation where "Water" is identified as a Canadian film, which is true, but which creates the misleading impression it is a French-language film, when it's a film set in India, about Indian culture, in the Hindi language.
To say nothing of the fact that Apocalypto and Letters From Iwo Jima are obviously ineligible, even though they meet the only criteria suggested by the category title.
