I've been thinking, someone should create a thread for them, or a whole new area of the forum. Whatever will keep them the hell out of these threads.

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
I think it's a lock that Scorsese will be nominated for best director. Visually, it's not as strong as some of his other works, but it's probably his best cast ever and the director has to be given some credit for that.

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
Scorsese just told people at Rome Fest that he's done doing big-budget films, and wants to do small movies for a while. His next project is about 17th century portugese missionaries witnessing Christian prosecution in Japan. The implication that The Departed is, or could be, his last studio picture will probably help his oscar chances.
DarkHorizons says FooF is 132 mins.
The first For Your Consideration ads have graced the cover of Variety this morning- for The Prestige, interestingly.
By the way, the Untitled screening I saw the other day and mentioned a few posts back turned out to be David Fincher's epic 3 hour crime film, Zodiac, which would most definitely be up for awards if it was getting a qualifying run- the reason it isn't is due to David Geffen's wish to focus all his oscar money on Dreamgirls (and to a lesser extent WTC). I think Geffen might be making a mistake here. This is aready a very interesting race.

Nathan

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
If Scorsese is wrapping up his big budget career, I hope that both he and De Niro team up one last time.

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
I just saw Babel, and would agree that it deserves to be a frontrunner in all categories. An absolutely searing experience, even more raw and emotional than the previous two films. Just great. Inarritu introduced the film and said the trilogy is about "parents and children." I have to say, he is one cool guy. One can sense a progression in his abilities with each new picture. This deserves picture, direction, writing, cinematography, and writing in a big way. There are no lead roles, but Pitt might be able to wiggle into supporting.

Nathan

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
There are definitely some major perks to living in Hollywood. I just sort of like to see movies early, free, in massive state-of-the-art theatres, with the director/star there...sorry, couldn't help myself I'm trying to catch as many as humanly possible- about a screening every night- as I'm moving out of this god-forsaken place in 2 weeks. As cool as the screenings are, they aren't quite enough to make me stay here, although I do dread having to go to crappy multiplexes and watching stuff with the public again.

Nathan

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
I missed that Babel screening last night because I was waiting on someone else saying if they wanted to go or not, and by the time I got a response it was full.
Rinko Kikuchi has been getting supporting actress buzz from Babel as has Adrianna Barrazza, what'd you think of them Nathan?

Re: Oscar Watch 2006
Kikuchi is amazing, just mesmerizing to watch. She has a very watchable face. It's a very tough role, and not just because she plays a mute- her character is aching for acceptance in most anyway possible, which her disability constantly gets in the way of. Her section might be the highlight in a film full of highlights. A scene in a nightclub, lit with strobes and cutting between blasting music and dead silence, is staggering. The emotion of that scene (in which she is alienated from her friends) is painful to experience. This is the first performance I've seen her in, and I still have difficulty believing that she isn't deaf in real life.
Barrazza is great too, especially she's in the desert towards the end of the film. Her role is not as "juicy" as Kikuchi's, who probably has the juiciest role, but she does a fantastic job nonetheless. Frankly, all the performances are bloody brilliant. Everyone's at the top of their game. You all saw 21 Grams- Inarritu really knows how to get the performances. Every story is interesting, and everything ties together perfectly. He takes an instrumental cue from The Insider and reinvents its meaning by using it over the film's finale. I can't recommend the film highly enough. None of the performances are large enough to warrant lead nominations, though, and since everyone's so uniformly great, no one stands out noticeably. I suggested Pitt earlier for a supporting, but his role is no larger or smaller than anyone else's. He's simply the most popular actor. I would love to see Kikuchi get a nomination- we know its possible, what with Shoreh Ag...oo and Keisha C-H getting nommed in 03.
This is such a fantastic year.

Nathan

With what I've seen and expect to see, I agree.
I did manage to see Flags of Our Fathers tonight. I'll post a review tomorrow. I don't see too much Oscar love headed it's way, but I've been wrong before. It's a decent film, well-done, but it meanders around it's themes. It's being sold as something it's not (a war movie), and is simply missing some crucial focus that made it a missed opportunity for me. In short, "Black Hawk Down is to We Were Soldiers" as "SPR is to Flags of Our Fathers".
Still worth seeing.
