High Def Camera Usage (i.e Dion Beebe's work in Miami Vice)


Beebe's name has been used more than any other cinematographer in reviews this year and once you see the terrific Miami Vice, you will understand - I have never ever loved the visual look of a film more than Vice

Can someone explain - or provide a link - on how this type of photography produces such a unique look? As a complete novice, to me (a) nighttime scenes aren't necessarily clear but there is a lot of detail, especially on the periphery and (b) in daylight, the images are incredibly gorgeous. I am a bit surprised I haven't seen more usage of this style but it is such a specialized look that I am thinking one could only use high-def on action films.
