Re: *** Official PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Man's Chest Discussion Thread

when I finally saw this on DVD, I overall enjoyed it- but had the near same feeling as when I eventually saw the first one- a little goes a long ways.
A little Jack Sparrow, a little swordfighting, a little slapstick to pad out the tension in a set piece...it just goes on and on and on...and then its time for the second act and repeat the whole process again.
It seems odd to complain that a film is over-stuffed, but these are (for me anyway). They don't get me especially jazzed to see the next adventure, so much as they leave me kind of exhausted and numbed.

Good movies, and well made but I just wish they weren't so bloated.

I agree Tim. I like both films equally, maybe even giving a slight edge to DMC. They're both extremely fun, well done popcorn movies that know exactly what they are and wisely don't try to reach beyond their limits. I can't wait to se AWE next month.

Oh I knew you were just razzing me Chris!

3 times! Dang.

I was surprised I liked it much more the second time. Like I said too, there are still issues that remain but truthfully the final act was just exhilarating. Pretty cool. The original is still much preferred though.

One angle I thought of & I know I'm WAY late to the discussion thread is the reason for Elizabeth's betrayal of Jack due to him being caught in the numerous selfishness situations etc...or is it due to her conflicting feelings she has for him?

Kind of think her actions were mostly due to his shenanigans and her regret over this was guilt.

If this has been discussed to the death, no worries.

I keep saying I'm going to revisit DMC again before the new one comes out in May so I guess I'd better get on it soon. I saw DMC in the theater and was extemely disappointed, mainly because I loved the first film so much. It just seemed way too long and bloated compared to the original and I really didn't enjoy it much at all. Hopefully I'll like it more the second time around and it will get me pumped up for the final installment(although the trailer already does a good enough job of that IMHO).

After the recent soundtrack discussion going on in the At Worlds End thread, I finally picked up the score for Dead Man's Chest yesterday at Wal Mart. Just $9.92!

You guys are correct in that this score is very good. Very good.

Giving it a louder spin this morning too and so far my favorites are #9 Wheel of Fortune & #2 The Kraken.

Re: *** Official PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Man's Chest Discussion Thread

Back from the dead. I too just got the soundtrack. DMC is a great listen, and I think The Kraken is one of my favorite action tunes ever.

Some other thoughts, reviewing this thread.

1) I watched the Davy Jones special on my Blu Ray this week. Knoll outdid himself. The imo-cap technology, seemingly simple, is brilliant. It puts those scenes back in the actors and director's hands. THAT'S a real breakthrough. Definitely a technical marvel. Hope AWE has something on the crew.

2) There is *FINALLY* an Art of... book for the series. Amazoned it (no way I pay $50), and I am looking forward to getting it. The production design and visual aesthetic of this series is what worked the best for me. Can't wait to see a book full of it

3) This thread had images of Jack in Chinese Pirate garb...but that was never in the film. Thoughts???

DMC and AWE are certainly overproduced, overstuffed popcorn candy...but for all of that, I enjoy them. Lots of enthusiasm on screen. That counts for a lot.

The filmtracks.com reviewer was pretty damning in his assessment of this one. I LOVE this thing but I definitely see where he is coming from -- as I mentioned in the AWE thread, it is quite derivative. This huge fan of Zimmer's work, flaws and all (great melodies, but look elsewhere for complexity) doesn't mind at all...

OOPS! Posted in the wrong thread.

See Comments in AT WORLDS END thread.

{WTF was DMC's thread doing at the top of the forum anyway}
