According to Poland even the eyes are cgi. Hot Blog Post

But I think we can go overboard when we analyze effects based on how "interesting" the underlying character is. Heck, that wasn't even the standard last year, when Kong largely failed to win over audiences (unlike Gollum) but he won WETA the award anyway.

You can have an interesting character that looks like crap...or a crappy character that looks real. Both take you out of the film.
I felt that for Kong, the WETA team was able to create a lot of depth and sympathy for a character that could'nt even speak. And though the film wasn't too successful financially, I felt it succeeded in allowing the audience that did see the film to connect with a character that was created with computers.

I agree that depth and CG work don't have much to do with one another, though what I was really trying to say was that even though the CG looked amazing, it feels a bit wasted on a fairly static character.

I'll admit though that when I first saw the conceptual design for Davey Jones, it seemed kinda silly for a character in the movie. But the way he looks on film, it definitely works well.

Interestingly, I'll probably have to re-evaluate all the Davey Jones references in the first film. I always imagined that the way the characters mentioned him, he was more figurative than an actual person/thing doing everything.

Re: *** Official PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Man's Chest Discussion Thread

I figure my font size is too small to read, otherwise I would've had some responses to my Monkey Island suggestion. That and my spoiler type question. Would anyone care to look back at my post from the previous page and give some suggestions of their own about some of my observations?
I'm a huge fan of Chow Yun-Fat and own alot of his Hong Kong films on DVD so I'm eager with anticipation with him being in Part III. Perhaps he'll be the Chinese counterpart to Jack Sparrow, sort of like long lost brothers of the seven seas.
There's a good chance this Friday I'll take myself again.

I absolutely can't wait for the DVD. Hopefully it'll be a 2-Discer like the original.

By the way, concerning the "Lost Disc", i.e. "third disc", from the last film for DVD... Does it have any significant extras I should be clamoring for or should I just look it up on dvdcompare.net to see if I can just score the disc?

And posts like this are why ILM will (better!) get an Oscar.

My favorite detail on Jones are the little droplets of water on his face. Just amazing detail. And yeah, like most things in the film, Jones get's better on repeat viewng. He's a great fantasy character, wonderfully animated. There is a very lovely and subtle pathos to him.

I really can't wait for the DVD.

From the EW story:

Quote:
But ILM's crack team did so well at creating watery, sparkly orbs in CG form, simply using Nighy's darting eyes as reference, that Verbinski never demanded the real thing. As convincing as the eyes look in those close-ups, according to Knoll they are not the actor's actual eyes.
Well, blow me down! I would have bet gobs of cash those were really Bill Nighy's eyes (they certainly look like the same eyes I saw in Underworld). Very well done, then!

Though they did say they used Nighy's eye movements "as reference," so he still helped them out a bit.

During my second viewing last night, I consciously tried to spot fakeness in the Davy Jones character. I couldn't do it in a closeup. Some of the long shots of him walking looked shakey, but apparently they used motion capture for those, making the fake look my perspective and not anything real.

Re: *** Official PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: Dead Man's Chest Discussion Thread

Stellan Skarsgård was absolutely brilliant as Will Turner's father. Must be tedious getting into all of those prosthetics and make-up.

Another quick thing I've been pondering about and have been wanting to add...
Has anyone played the Monkey Island series of games from LucasArts?
They were:
The Secret of Monkey Island (1990)
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (1991)
The Curse of Monkey Island (1997 - Was originally supposed to be a feature film.)
Escape from Monkey Island (2000)

The Monkey Island games got alot of it's inspiration from the ride and the Pirates of the Caribbean films have in turn also derived inspiration from the games. Just a quick observation... To me, Will Turner mirrors Guybrush Threepwood and Hector Barbossa mirrors the ghost Captain LeChuck. The VooDoo Lady and her bayou eerily mirrors the first two games featuring her.

As I've mentioned in my post previous to the last one, were it not my appreciation for Monkey Island, I wouldn't like pirate type films today. That was also the main reason why I've simply enjoyed both of the Pirates of the Caribbean films so far. I should also post my Monkey Island deal in the video game software section.
Oh, and anymore pictures of Pirates of the Caribbean III are more than welcome. I'll also look on www.countingdown.com for anything. Hopefully it'll be subtitled Uncharted Waters because that just rings adventure to me. Just can't wait to see Chow Yun-Fat as a pirate!

The character design of Davy Jones was one of the first things that stuck me as particularly awesome when I saw the trailer.

ILM would be absolutely robbed if they don't get the award this year.

well, if they have the same "no sequel" rule that the academy was rumored to have last year, then ILM can forget it.
