ALPHA DOG Discussion Thread

Well I searched and searched and didn't find anything about this title expect for it being on people's "Movies to see in 2007" list.

Anyways, there have been a ton of TV commercials on for this lately, and the film is all over the Xbox 360's Live Marketplace (Heck, I got the HD trailer and I love it). When I originally saw the new onslaught of commercials, I was like "hey, wait a minute, didn't I see these spots a long time ago and really wanna see this movie? What the heck happened?"

I did a little research and it turns out I was right. The movie has been done for awhile now, but it was shelved due to legal reasons until recently. Basically the kids who the movie is based after are currently in a murder trial, and they're trying to stop the film from being released so that the jury in their case isn't swayed by the motion picture's portrayal of them.

If they're innocent, I withold my right to agree with them until I see the movie itself. If they're guilty, then bah! You're going to jail/death anyways, why not have 15 minutes of fame in a movie!? Oh well.

Onto the actual movie itself. Basically some kids "kidnap" the younger brother of a guy who owes them money, and it comes down to possibly killing him. It's an edgy movie, looks to be really good, and I'll be in the theater on friday.

Anyone else joining me? Or have any thoughts or further insight into the movie?

I don't know if I will watch this, on one hand it seems like a good premise but on the other hand the commercials make it seem too "MTV" for the subject matter.

Good lord, there's nothing worse than the foul stench of desperation when someone wants to be famous.

Re: ALPHA DOG Discussion Thread

I saw the film earlier tonight at a special preview showing. I'll try not to spoil anything (is it really spoiling though considering it's a true story?) but I must say that I walked out of the theater angry at what happened. Nick Cassavettes spends so much time making sure the audience warms up to a character that
Spoiler:
doesn't survive, I'll just put it that way without getting too into it.
.

The film is badly paced but the storyline does pick up quite a bit after the kidnapping starts. At the beginning, I was embarassed at how bad Timberlake is at acting, but you grow to like his character as him and Zach become tight. He was the only one of the whole lot of them who had any redeeming value.

BTW, anyone else think it's time for Shawn Hatosy to stop playing 18-19 year old roles? I mean, I know it's common for actors in their mid-20's to play teens but this guy is 31 for crying out loud.

I suppose the ticket price is worth it alone to see Sharon Stone without makeup and in a fat suit... hard to believe it was the same woman who exuded sex appeal in the 90's with Basic Instinct and Sliver.

You know, I originally wanted so bad to see it that I was gonna go on Friday. Then I had a flashback to the last time I went to my local theater on opening night of a "teenage" movie, and decided heavily against that idea. I'm saving it for a rainy afternoon sometime this week...I'll post my review later...

Saw it, not afraid to admit it. Timberlake doesn't embarrass himself, but the real standout of the cast is Ben Foster. If everyone had been up to his level, the film would have been electric. As it stands, it's interesting but flawed. I agree with you that the pacing will make most people impatient, but I think it represents a deliberate choice to stick closely to the sequence of historical events and to use a true-crime story as a way of exploring certain kinds of male relationships. As a result, Cassavetes lets scenes "breathe" a lot longer than would be appropriate for a well-crafted thriller. (Or maybe I'm just projecting too much of the father's directing style on the son. )

I thought Emile Hirsch was the weak link in the cast. He's supposed to be the "alpha dog" who sets things in motion, but Hirsch can't convey any sense of how Steven got to be the king of the hill.
