The character pointedly states his purpose is getting rich. He stole from a man not too willing to chase after him, and not willing to report the loss. This is why they don't tear the bank apart...this is why the suspects are let loose after basic questioning. He has a slight attack of the conscience, probably the character having fun, but he allows the authorities to determine that. He got his diamonds, scott-free. Which was his intent. No one was hurt, no loss to the bank, no pursuit.
The perfect crime.
