Superman The Movie
It's amazing that the first hour of this 2+ hour film is all exposition and backstory for the characters. It's amazing the 5+ minute opening titles sequence never seems boring. The entire film is amazing and holds up today just as it did back when it was released. Sure, some of the flying sequences are a bit dodgy, but you can't hold that against the film. Chris Reeve is and always will be Superman to a legion of moviegoers. Brilliantly directed and written, with an all star cast, in one of the most known movies in our pantheon.

Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Better than the Lester version? Sure. The best it could be? No, but that's to be expected. Some of the goofier moments have been excised and the story tightened up a bit. The first hour moves incredibly fast while the second seems to stand still at certain spots. It's admirable what was done with the available footage, but it's also a crying shame to imagine what could have been.

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2006)

just a general question for the thread at large: will the world explode when Mario realizes there are other genres of film?

I'm amazed that so many horror films exist every time I read one of your posts, Mario. The amount and variety of films you see blows my mind.

Adam,

I'm sure your post is complimentary overall but I can't quite figure out how!

I'm laughing my ass off, but I'd better not say anything else. Hilarious.

Re: Track the Films You Watch (2006)

November Summary
total movies: 10
average gpa: 3.1 (31/10)
summary: slow month. top honors to singles (boy i loved that movie) with guilty pleasure going to thank you for smoking (just loved the wit). no real stinkers, but i could have done without watching elf i guess.

title: cool hand luke
rating: b
comments: seems i'm on some kind of escape-from-prison kick. first papillion, then this. i definitely enjoyed this movie, but it did feel a bit long and just a tad uneven (not sure why). i know i'm missing out on a ton of fantastic older movies, so i'm grateful for the chance to play catch-up now.

title: singles
rating: a
comments: seen this when it first came out, but i just don't remember it resonating with me as much as it did this time (guess i can relate more now). always been a cameron fan and this just reinforces that. how he hits all the notes just right amazes me. i laughed a lot. also, he's always had a knack for soundtracks, but this one is killer dude!

title: fast & the furious: tokyo drift
rating: b
comments: sometimes i love watching a movie just to zone, with no expectations of "oscar-worthy" performances, etc. for that purpose, this movie nicely fit the bill. fun, fancy cars, cute skinny asian chicks ... what more could you ask?

title: elf
rating: c
comments: i've never been much of a ferrell fan, and this one really didn't change my opinion. but, as far as holiday moies go, it wasn't the worst i've seen.

title: hoodwinked
rating: c
comments: with the animation bar set so high, this one just didn't have quite the charm, wit, or production value of the heavy hitters. it wasn't a horrible movie, but really ... nothing special. the lack-luster songs didn't help.

title: cars
rating: a
comments: yup, definitely a good flick. as my friend put it, "it's doc hollywood with cars" ... which is exactly what it was. had a nice message that i appreciated ... especially watching it with my boys.

title: thank you for smoking
rating: a
comments: surprised by how much i liked this one. the lead hits every note so perfectly it was almost scary. great dialog with some wonderful one-line-zingers that made me crack up too.

title: voices of a distant star
rating: b
comments: nice melancholy anime short (~30 minutes) with some great visuals. the story was a bit dis-jointed (apparantly out of production necessity), but all-in-all very well done by one guy on his home pc. the english dub didn't feel quite right though ... especially the male voice.

title: singin' in the rain
rating: b
comment: never seen this one, figured it was worth it since it's a classic. some snappy dialog, neat dance numbers, and enjoyable acting made for a good time. i will say they could have trimmed a couple of the numbers down or off ... but that may be more a sign-of-the-times thing .. i bet audiences back then didn't mind.

title: the great escape
rating: b
comments: apparantly more of my escape-from-prison phase. i enjoyed it, but it didn't blow me away. i had a hard time with the believabiltiy factor on this one ... they sure made the germans look like idiots. also, with such heavy star power, i was surprised how one-dimensional everyone was. but it's always great to see hollywood legnds in their younger days ... and this made me appreciate chicken run even more.

Ugh. Not much to say about this month, other than 1.) I certainly subject myself to a lot of junk, 2.) "Clerks II" was a big letdown, and 3.) every Bond movie from now on should cast a French actress to play the leading lady.

I like that Mario commits to actually rating the films he watches and offers more than just the generic ho-hum "I watched this today while eating my cereal" types of one-line posts.

LOL! Nice one, Joe. Thanks for putting me in an even better mood than I already was after yesterday's bash of Bugs Bunny cartoons...!
