Spielberg Wreaks VENGEANCE on Dec. 23, 2005
From Hollywood Reporter:
Spielberg's Munich Olympics Film Set for Dec. 23
Steven Spielberg plans a summer start for his delayed movie about the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, and a Dec. 23 release in theaters.
The untitled project, a co-production between Universal Pictures and Spielberg's DreamWorks, had been set to go before the cameras last year. Casting was under way when Spielberg decided to have "Angels in America" playwright Tony Kushner do a rewrite on the project, on which writers Eric Roth ("Forrest Gump") and Charles Randolph ("The Interpreter") also had worked.
With the project postponed, Spielberg moved quickly to begin filming his adaptation of H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds," starring Tom Cruise . Paramount will release it June 29.
Details about the Olympics film have been carefully guarded. Universal will release it domestically. The studio's year-end lineup is potentially formidable because it also includes such films as Peter Jackson's "King Kong" (Dec. 14) and the screen version of the Mel Brooks musical "The Producers" (Dec. 21).

Isn't that gonna be an awfully quick production? It certainly doesn't sound like a CGI fest, but geez.
In any case, with 2 films from the master, 2005 cannot be a bad movie year

Gonna be a hell of a year. Malick, Jackson, Spielberg (twice!), Episode 3, the Producers, Memoirs of a Geisha, Son of the Mask...

Man, this is one of Spielberg's "on" years, isn't it? Go Steve, go! Looking forward to both this and War of the Worlds.

DAMN. Well, Clint filmed Million Dollar Baby in less than two months, and Vengeance would seem to be on a similar level.
The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

Spielberg can bang out productions. Most folks would take twice as long on something of WotW's size. Vengeance should be doable for him.
Can't wait,
Chuck

For most people, yeah. Spielberg seems to be one of the best people at running a set and getting what he wants from his cast; practically everything he does comes in ahead of time and under budget.

I wonder how this movie will be structured, though I guess it's a bit pointless to speculate all that much at this time. The title certainly implies a focus on the aftermath of the Munich killings, when Israeli commando squads tracked down various terrorist plotters over a number of years. Some very weird incidents happened, including at least one tragic case of mistaken identity.
The hostage-taking, and subsequent killings, was the subject of the Oscar-winning doc One Day In September from a few years ago. It briefly mentioned some of the aftermath, but most of the focus was on what happened at the Olympics. It even featured some interview clips with one of the surviving hostage takers, whom they tracked down somewhere in Africa.
I'm pretty sure my father (he was a high-jumper in the early '60s in Israel) knew one of the Israeli coaches who was killed.

I'm actually quite interested in that event so naturally I'm looking for anything on or about it. Better that it's Spielberg eh? Can't wait.

Man, that Spielberg is a film making machine. I wonder if even sleeps. I think that we as movie buffs should be thankful that a director as gifted as Spielberg has such a strong work ethic. At the rate he's currently working he might add 30 more films to his filmography before he stops. If I had accomplished what he has, and if I had his money I'd probably be content to just sit on a tropical island and do as little as possible for the rest of my life. It's amazing what he's accomplished already, and it's exciting what he has yet to accomplish.
