It has to be the most disturbing, vile and sadistic R-rated movie I've ever seen...and I loved every minute of it.

Sure it was formulaic, but as others have stated, it was rollercoaster-styled. I pretty much knew what was coming, but still couldn't believe what they were able to get away with. I've never seen such gore and scenes of sadistic brutality in an American R-rated movie.

The "comic relief" moments lightened the tone momentarily, at least for me. There were several scenes where I burst out laughing, while others left the theater in apparent disgust.

After leaving the theater, I checked the poster in the lobby and the ticket booth to verify the movie was actually R-rated, and not NC-17 or Unrated. I have a hard time understanding how the MPAA allowed this film to get an R-rating, while so many other horror movies have been censored beyond comparison.

Usually, scenes of this graphic nature have only been allowed in movies for "historical" context (i.e. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), and not for pure exploitation, like HOSTEL.

The MPAA must have been snoozing during their screening of HOSTEL, and for this I thank them. I can only imagine what an "unrated" or "director's cut" DVD might look like.

I think this one got by the censors because it was billed and intended to be a hard R-Rated horror flick, as oppossed to 99% of the other horror films that get cut to fit a PG-13.

I loved it as well, but actually thought there would be more gore, as I'm pathetic. One of the better horror films I've seen recently.

I'm sad I missed Wolf Creek in the theaters. didn't know what it was until it was to late.

I will NEVER understand why some actually like "Hostel."

Never.

But it's easy to explain:

Spoiler:
Spurting eye goop.

Duh!

I like movies that questions the motives of modern primative behaviour, and the morality of violence. If a film questions this with ample amounts of boobs and blood, well, that's fine by me.

I think you're giving Eli Roth far too much credit.

I probably am, but he wasn't exactly subtle in this message.

Reminded me of Peckinpah's "Straw Dogs"*.

* Now I KNOW I'm giving it way too much credit!

but the realistic intensity of something like the scenes in Wolf Creek makes me feel all dirty inside

But, you must have read that the movie included such scenes. Isn't that why you saw it in the first place...?

I finally just got around to seeing this one, and I'm on the fence. On one hand, I thought it was very stylish and gruesome, but it felt like it was missing something. Perhaps it was a simple as not really liking the main characters. By the end, I was rooting for Jay Hernandez's character, but I still didn't really feel for either of them when they were being tortured. I cared much more for the characters in Wolf Creek, and consider it to be the better of the two films. Going one step further, I prefer The Devil's Rejects to both films. I was drawn the antagonists and protagonists alike in Zombie's film, and stylistically it's a step above either Wolf Creek or Hostel. I did really like the revenge scenes at the end. Very reminiscent of The Hills Have Eyes and Last House on the Left.

I'm still an Eli Roth fan, but I prefer Cabin Fever. It may be a little too slap-stick, but sometimes I like having a little fun in my horror movies.

By the way, did anyone else notice that the music in the scene where she is having sex with Josh is Willow's seduction song from The Wicker Man?

Glad I'm not the only one that noticed that. I thought it worked pretty well.

Overall I liked this movie but I thought that every time something suspensful happened and the movie got 'going' they would ruin the suspense by having a comedic (or, at least, a non-suspense) scene follow it. It was as if every time they succeeded at building suspense, they'd do their best to get rid of it immediately.

I guess hearing all the hype that it was the scariest movie of the decade didn't help for me either. I was thinking it would be more like Last House On The Left, The Hills Have Eyes (as Matt mentioned), and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre that didn't let up until the end.

Still, it's not a bad movie but I enjoyed Cabin Fever much more.

I thought the movie worked just fine all the way through until Jay Hernandez went back into the torture house to save the Japanese girl. That would be the day I go back into the place to save someone I barely knew when I just spent the past 15 minutes trying to get the hell out of there. Other than that, the movie did just what it was supposed to. AND the eyeball scene... I'll pass on ever seeing anything like that again!

POWERFUL THE DARKSIDE IS... I caved and bought the Star Wars re-release after saying the whole time that I wouldn't.

I Saw it with my sister, cousin, and friend. My sister and I are the only ones who really liked it. Of course she's taken after me over the past couple years and really likes horror and suspense movies now. She even likes gory movies too.

It was funny though when we were watching it, I grossed my sister out by saying to her "So that's how they get Cheez Whiz." when the eyeball scene happened.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but my sister's the one I made a thread about on what movies to watch with her a few years ago. She's going to be 16 this year and is mature for her age, so I think she's old enough to see most kinds of movies now as long as she wants to.

My DVD Collection
I met him, fifteen years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the most rudimentary sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong. I met this six-year-old child, with this blind, pale, emotionless face and, the blackest eyes... the Devil's eyes! I spent eight years trying to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up for I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... evil! - Dr Sam Loomis(Halloween)

Damn you Mop N Glo! - Stewie (Family Guy)
