Pat Morita Dies at 73
Breaking News
Quote:
Actor Pat Morita, whose portrayal of the wise and dry-witted Mr. Miyagi in "The Karate Kid" earned him an Oscar nomination, has died. He was 73.
Morita died Thursday at his home in Las Vegas of natural causes, said his wife of 12 years, Evelyn. She said in a statement that her husband, who first rose to fame with a role on "Happy Days," had "dedicated his entire life to acting and comedy."

RIP. To this day I still love the first Karate Kid movies, and it wasn't because of Daniel.

I was reading this article about it.
| Morita said in a 1986 interview with The Associated Press he was billed as Noriyuki "Pat" Morita in the film because producer Jerry Weintraub wanted him to sound more ethnic. He said he used the billing because it was "the only name my parents gave me." |
I didn't understand this paragraph. Which is the "only name [his] parents gave [him]", Noriyuki or Pat?

Rest in peace, Pat.
The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

So sad. Miyagi is one of my all-time favorite movie characters. I would have loved to see Morita win the Academy Award back in 1985 but alas, it was hard to fault the selection of the late Haing S. Ngor for The Killing Fields.

He was one of my favorite people ever since I first became aware of him in the Karate Kid. I also loved a one-shot cable comedy show he hosted. Thanks for everything, Pat.
