I would like to think that Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen is in this category. It's one of my all-time favorite films, and it's certainly grown in status as people have discovered it on video.

I agree Jefferson. I was actually part of the infamous Paramus New Jersey test screening that was to decide whether Terry Gilliam would recieve final cut. He didn't of course. I remember the crowd loving it and cheering at the end, although there were more than a few walkouts.
After the film was over, I saw Terry Gilliam hugging his producers in the lobby celebrating how well the screening went. Unfortunately that was before they read the score cards and scored less than they had hoped.
