The Evil Dead was released on January 1, 1983.

"The Evil Dead" premiered as "Book of the Dead" on October 15, 1981. There are many pictures of various people involved with the film (Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Rob Tapert and Josh Becker are the ones I know of) standing in front of the Redford Theater marquee with "OCT 15" clearly visible. One of these pictures, featuring Raimi, Tapert and Campbell on the night of the show wearing tuxes can be seen on page 9 of Bill Warren's "Evil Dead Companion". This one comes from the website of Josh Becker, beckerfilms.com:
and one with Ethan Coen:
Someone actually held onto the torn ticket stubs and for several years you could buy them on eBay (I never got around to buying some and now I regret it), the October 15th date was clearly visible. You can barely make out "October 15, 1981" in this pic:
The first words of the first chapter of Bill Warren's "The Evil Dead Companion":

It's the first public showing of Book of the Dead -- soon to be retitled The Evil Dead

imdb.com lists October 15, 1981 as the film's premiere. You can see that for yourself
here.
There is no mention of any significant aspect of the film's release being January 1, 1983. In any case, January 1, 1983 was a Saturday. It's one thing to hold a "sneak preview" or "premiere" of a film on a Thursday (which October 15, 1981 was) but there's no way the film was actually released on a Saturday. The film's distribution pattern was erratic at best. Given the various aspects of the film's release, it is likely that somewhere along the line somebody could only pinpoint the film's release down to 1983 and they simply used January 1 (which would obviously be selected because it's the first day of the year) as an abitrary number. The simple fact of the matter is this: the first time "The Evil Dead" was shown to an audience was on October 15, 1981.
Don't you ever, EVER compare me to "Family Guy," you hear me Kyle? Compare me to "Family Guy" again and so help me, I will kill you where you stand!
Do you have any idea what it's like? Everywhere I go: "Hey Cartman you must like 'Family Guy,' right?" "Hey, your sense of humor reminds me of 'Family Guy' Cartman!" I AM NOTHING LIKE FAMILY GUY! WHEN I MAKE JOKES THEY ARE INHERENT TO A STORY! DEEP SITUATIONAL AND EMOTIONAL JOKES BASED ON WHAT IS RELEVANT AND HAS A POINT, NOT JUST ONE RANDOM INTERCHANGEABLE JOKE AFTER ANOTHER!
