I understood what was being said and agree with your points about what Shyamalan was saying. I just found the movie to be self-important, pretentious (even by Shyamalan's standards) and boring.
EDIT: It's cool that people dig the movie but just because I didn't like it that doesn't mean that I didn't 'get' it.

Fair enough. Though, I really respect Shyamalan for making this movie, even if you find it pretentious; which I didn't. I mean, if you make a film like this not everybody is going to be on your side, it also means you didn't make something that is easy to digest; which is why I really liked Signs as well.
Besides, if you don't like the way Shyamalan thinks why do you continue to watch his movies? Schadenfreude?

Lady In The Water is the first of his movies that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. Just because I found this movie and him pretentious doesn't mean that I've disliked his other stuff. I'll be at the next movie that he makes on opening day because I think he's a great director and he's going to make more great movies. I just didn't find this to be one of them.
EDIT: Fixed spelling.

Re: M. Nights next film "Lady in the Water'
I will say that while I like this one, it's not near as good as 6th Sense, Unbreakable, or Signs. I LOVE those films. Didn't care for the Village at all except for the incredibly rich and exquisite score. Speaking of score, there was some resemblance to Signs and Village in this....

Fair enough. Just one last question: Do you think he should make movies out of other someone else's scripts while he writes a new one?
I was thinking about it the other day, and I thought maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing if he, indeed, does works on one of the last two Harry Potter movies. I mean, they will be made anyway, right? So why don't they give it to him, and see what he can do with it?

It seems like he is at his best on his material since he has more emotional investment in it but I'm sure he could knock any good script out of the park. Either way, I'd love to see his take on Harry Potter... or really anything else.

Re: M. Nights next film "Lady in the Water'
I watched this tonight (my second viewing) with my wife and daughter (their first) and it was better than I remembered it. The score, the cinematography and Giamatti's performance -- first rate. We were all moved to tears. I have no problem with people who hate this film. I agree with many posters here that MNS has to look at himself in the mirror and ask "What can I do to get back on track?" The next Hitchcock? That's big pressure. How about being the first Shyamalan?
By the way, I was very disappointed with the PQ of the DVD. It has a lot of muddy noise.
I remember the immortal words of Socrates who said "I drank what?"

Re: M. Nights next film "Lady in the Water'
I have the HD-DVD and it looks and sounds (TrueHD track) excellent. As for the film itself, I've watched it three times now, it's my second favorite of his films right behind Unbreakable.

Re: M. Nights next film "Lady in the Water'
What a pleasent surprise!
I remembered all the bad reviews this film got when it came out, and never got around to seeing it for one reason or another. I thought it was excellent and probably rank it somewhere in the middle of my favorite MNS film list.
I know the guy has taken plenty of heat lately, but imo he can flat out direct! I love his imagination and totally buy into the heart of his films. Another success for M Night for me.

Shyamalan's deliberately-paced, relatively uncluttered style featuring many long takes would go too far away from that of any previous POTTER film. He might bring something interesting to the series, but unless he is willing to surrender to a sweeping, opulent visual style and much quicker cutting and operatic acting and tons of special effects, he is altogether the wrong man for the job. Imagine, say, the first ALIEN sequel being offered to Robert Redford instead of to James Cameron (not that he'd take it, of course).

Re: M. Nights next film "Lady in the Water'
Not too bad. I went in expecting to see a silly story shot in a clever style, but was surprised to learn that I was actually engaged in the story despite being unenthralled with the way MNS filmed it.
Fantastic score from JNH. He and MNS really do great work together.
