A multiple heads-up to my fellow film buffs in the USA here, as I spotted these while I was skimming through Turner Classic Movies' schedules for May & June 2005 (all times Eastern):

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2:00 AM

Sergio Leone's THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES (1961), starring Rory Calhoun, Lea Massari, Georges Marchal. Running time: 129 minutes. Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format.

Wednesday, May 18, 9:45 PM

Orson Welles' MR. ARKADIN (1955), starring Orson Welles, Michael Redgrave, Robert Arden. Running time: 99 minutes.

Wednesday, May 18, 11:30 PM

Orson Welles' THE IMMORTAL STORY (1968), starring Orson Welles, Jeanne Moreau, Robert Coggio. Running time: 58 minutes.

Thursday, May 19, 12:45 AM

Orson Welles' F IS FOR FAKE (1976), starring Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Oja Kodar. Also coming out soon on Criterion DVD. Running time: 85 minutes

Wednesday, June 22, 4:15 AM

Cornel Wilde's NO BLADE OF GRASS (1970), starring Nigel Davenport, Jean Wallace. Running time: 97 minutes. Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format.

Thursday, June 23, 4:15 AM

Ranald MacDougall's THE WORLD, THE FLESH & THE DEVIL (1959), starring Harry Belafonte, Inger Stevens, Mel Ferrer. Running time: 95 minutes. Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format.

Thursday, June 30, 2:30 AM

Maurice Tourneur's THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1929), starring Lionel Barrymore, Jane Daly, Lloyd Hughes. Silent/talkie hybrid film. Running time: 95 minutes.

Here are links to the May & June schedules:

May--

June--
http://www.turnerclassicmovies.com/S...int/0,,06-2005|0|,00.html

I'm especially psyched about COLOSSUS OF RHODES, MR. ARKADIN, NO BLADE OF GRASS and MYSTERIOUS ISLAND.

A renewed reminder that THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES will be airing tonight (though technically it'll be May 3rd) at 2:00 AM (Eastern) on TCM.

Though a Sergio Leone film (his first solo directorial feature), don't expect it to be "A FISTFUL OF DRACHMAS" or "ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE MEDITERRANEAN". A better than average "sword 'n sandal" epic, though. This'll be my first time seeing it in proper widescreen, after a few viewings in foolscreen years ago on TNT (when that was a very different (read: better) cable network).

Thanks, Peter. I recorded Colossus last night and am looking forward to watching it.

Jason...be advised: I'm glad that I watched "The Colossus Of Rhodes" as it was broadcast, in addition to recording it on the DVR (with plans to put to DVD). I'm sure you'll notice on your recording that there is a very annoying audio/video sync problem. YES, it WAS that way on the broadcast as well, so there's nothing wrong with your recording. Had I not actually watched the broadcast, I'd have been driving myself nuts trying to figure out how my recording got THAT far out of sync!

Fortunately, I have some great editing software (VideoReDo) which works wonders with such issues.

Just a heads-up...

Damn, I hate to miss these, instead I took an extra shiftw when I could of seen los olvidados and viridiana.

Thursdays are apparently Mexican cinema days in May. and there are a bunch of films coming up that look very interesting, especially since Mexican cinema is extremely overlooked by the world at large, 2 in particular of interest to me, because they're from the 1930s. El compadre mendoza (1934), and Vamanos con Pancho Villa (1936).

Plus there are a couple interesting films on the imports this month:

Westfront 1918, a German 1930 film that looks pretty stunning, and Kapo a Pontecorvo film from 1959

Westfront 1918, Friday May 13th at 11PM PST
El compadre mendoza, Thursday May 19th 5PM PST
Vamanos con Pancho Villa, Thursday May 19th 6:30PM PST
Kapo, Friday May 27th, at 11PM PST

I wish I had have seen this thread sooner! I missed the first two Bunuel's tonight (Nazarin and Los Olvidados) but caught it in time to DVR Viridiana, I'm getting Exterminating Angel (I have a bad copy on DVD, so I'm hoping for a good quality print), and can't wait for Simon of the Desert. I've never seen Simon and am excited to finally get a chance to see it.

Another reminder that these somewhat rare sci-fi films will be airing on TCM in a few days:

Wednesday, June 22, 4:15 AM (Eastern)

Cornel Wilde's NO BLADE OF GRASS (1970), starring Nigel Davenport, Jean Wallace. Running time: 97 minutes. Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format.

Thursday, June 23, 4:15 AM (Eastern)

Ranald MacDougall's THE WORLD, THE FLESH & THE DEVIL (1959), starring Harry Belafonte, Inger Stevens, Mel Ferrer. Running time: 95 minutes. Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format.

--and next week:

Thursday, June 30, 2:30 AM (Eastern)

Maurice Tourneur's THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (1929), starring Lionel Barrymore, Jane Daly, Lloyd Hughes. Interesting early sci-fi silent/talkie hybrid film, very different from the 1961 Ray Harryhausen movie of the same name. Running time: 95 minutes.

Tonight's the night (actually very early Wednesday morning) for the rarely-shown NO BLADE OF GRASS (1970):

TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES Wednesday, June 22, 4:15 AM (EST)

And in the same 4:15 AM slot the following day, THE WORLD, THE FLESH & THE DEVIL (1959):

Thursday, June 23, 4:15 AM (EST)

Oh, and at 8 PM (EST) Thursday, June 23, not quite as rare, but an early James Cagney film I've wanted to see for awhile (and have heard good things about, from some other HTF members here):

THE PICTURE SNATCHER (1933)

Several interesting things (some rarer than others) are are airing on TCM in September:

Jack Cardiff's brutal action/adventure DARK OF THE SUN (1968-British, aka THE MERCENARIES), Thursday Sept 1, 4:30 PM (EST)

Michael Powell's THE EDGE OF THE WORLD (1937-British), Sunday Sept 4, 8 PM (EST)

--and his follow-up documentary, RETURN TO THE EDGE OF THE WORLD (1978-British), Sunday Sept 4, 9:15 PM (EST)

A vintage 1970s TV movie, THE PHANTOM OF HOLLYWOOD (1974), Wednesday Sept 7, 12:15 PM (EST)

A spaghetti western, THE FIVE-MAN ARMY (1970-Italian), Saturday Sept 17, 12:00 AM (EST)

The Nazi-era fantasy epic MUNCHAUSEN (1943-German), Saturday Sept 17, 2:00 AM (EST)

Mickey Spillane plays his own Mike Hammer character, THE GIRL HUNTERS (1963-British), Saturday Sept 17, 6:00 AM (EST)

Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger's masterful STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN (1946-British, aka A MATTER OF LIFE & DEATH), Sunday Sept 18 8:00 PM (EST)

The same duo's BLACK NARCISSUS (1947-British), Sunday Sept 18, 10:00 PM (EST)

A fun little noir suspenser that doesn't air that often on TCM, DIAL 1119 (1950), Thursday Sept 22. 1:30 PM (EST)

Powell/Pressburger's THE RED SHOES (1948-British), Sunday Sept 25, 8:00 PM (EST)

Michael Powell's PEEPING TOM (1960-British), Sunday Sept 25, 10:30 PM (EST)

An odd, compelling James Cagney melodrama, THE MAYOR OF HELL (1933), Tuesday Sept 27, 6:00 AM (EST)

CARTOON ALLEY #9, 10, 11 & 12 (usually one installment of this series airs per month, but apparentlly in Sept, we get four, all highlighting British ANIMALAND cartoons from the Gaumont studio), shown several times during the month.
