THX - Thomas Holman Experience - a methodology for testing, calibrating, evaluating and rating a theatre to give the best quality possible in sound and picture.
It's not a sound format, it's merely a certification that a theatre should have good sound.
Sound formats are:
Dolby Stereo
Dolby Digital 5.1
Dolby Digital EX 6.1
DTS 5.1
DTS ES 6.1
SDDS 7.1 or 8.1

All are fairly common except the last which has yet to be commercially implemented. The best sound doesn't come from the most speakers but from excellent sound design, and that is rather subjective. For the most part, major blockbusters will have excellent surround sound. I'd expect Star Wars and King Kong to have some of the best sound of 2005 releases.
