Wow, Vera Drake with 2 big surprise nominations.

SHARK TALE over Polar Express???

Ray beats Rwanda into the big dance. Not a shock, but somewhat of a surprise.

Giamatti gets bumped for Eastwood. That is a big shock to me.

I forgot about Alda but at the time I saw the film I really thought he had a legit shot.

Shark Tale??? Did Dreamworks do some big promotion? I heard not one good thing about that film. Was Imelda Staunton one of Vera Drake's surprises? And no Giamatti? Put him on the "due" list with Johnny Depp (who might get taken off this year, if he gets the nom).

Ahhh, the "due" list...growing every year

Take care,
Chuck

Awesome to me:
ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Don Cheadle - HOTEL RWANDA

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Jamie Foxx - COLLATERAL
Clive Owen - CLOSER

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Catalina Sandino Moreno - MARIA FULL OF GRACE
Imelda Staunton - VERA DRAKE
Kate Winslet - ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE (All are awesome)
Cate Blanchett - THE AVIATOR
Laura Linney - KINSEY
Virginia Madsen - SIDEWAYS
Sophie Okonedo - HOTEL RWANDA
Natalie Portman - CLOSER

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
No surprises except Shark Tale, which is irrelevant to the voting

CINEMATOGRAPHY
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST

FILM EDITING
COLLATERAL

MAKEUP
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST (good choice, better than VFX)

MUSIC (SCORE)
FINDING NEVERLAND
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
THE VILLAGE

!BEST PICTURE
THE AVIATOR
FINDING NEVERLAND
MILLION DOLLAR BABY
RAY
SIDEWAYS)
I predict this Oscar ceremony will be the least watched since 1996 (seen in 1997). Based solely on these titles. It does crack my theory, but nothing they could do. There was no fitting "popular" film. PotC and F911 were too controversial

VISUAL EFFECTS
HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN
I, ROBOT
SPIDER-MAN 2
Good choices here.

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
THE INCREDIBLES

I am glad to see Passion for Score and Cinematography. I understood it could never get BIG noms, but these efforts really deserved it. Also very excited about all of the supporting actress nominees, and The Incredibles nominations (score and screenplay!)

Two noms for Foxx. Bet he wins BA, though. Unless the Depp is "due" train gets going

Cool,
Chuck

Okay, by announcement, my thoughts.

S. Actress - no surprises
Portman got the nom that SAG skipped, and I'm thrilled.

S. Actor - forgot Alda, but not surprised. He deserves it.
Owen, same as Portman.

Actress - I had Winslet here, but feared that she and the film might get overlooked. Very pleased.

Actor - how did Giamatti get beat out by Eastwood?

Direction - Hackford shows up again. Very surprised. But I swear as they said "Mike..." I was certain it was Nichols, it would have worked alphabetically. When Leigh popped up I couldn't believe it. I haven't seen VDrake yet, but I guess I need to.

O. Screenplay - Vera Drake again, a suprise to me.
Incredibles getting the nom (I realize Craig and maybe other predicted it) was a pleasant surprise.

A. Screenplay - how did I forget about Before Sunset in my predictions? This seems an obvious choice actually, but I was surprised somehow.

Foreign Film - was Flying Daggers not actually up for a nom, or is this just a mild suprise?

Animated - again, Shark Tale? Over Polar Express? Was it due to the rotoscope approach I wonder. I still can't believe that nom at all.

Best Pix - Ray has been going stronger than I thought it would when I saw it. I'm even more surprised that it beat out Rwanda at this point since it is also doing very well.
