I am not as big a fan of Burton as many are, as I find his movies little more than visually interesting.
Until today that is. Corpse Bride is one of the best movies I've seen all year. Behind the expected striking visuals is a surprisingly effective and moving, if simple story.
And to think that I only saw it because we got to the theater late for A History of Violence and I just had to see something. Wow.
That said, and I realize this may not be fair to the movie, I can't help to wonder that Pixar would have done with the same material. These thoughts steam form the fact the universe of the movie, namely the world of the dead is not as fully realized as the Pixar dudes would have made it. Not nearly as detailed and lacking in memorable supporting characters and extras. A dearth of details basically. Which makes sense, since Burton was out to tell a story and everything within the film only existed to serve said story, and not create a world.
Yes, it's not a Pixar flick (it's not even CGI), but they've become my standard in creating detailed, believable, coherent universes, be it out of toys, bugs, or fish. So I shudder to think of what they could do with the dead, without taking anything away from this wonderful little film.
