The Raven
Bela Lugosi lets it all hang out as a madman who is denied his true love and embarks on a diabolical scheme of torture and murder. Boris Karloff is a gangster who is manipulated into aiding Lugosi in his sinister plan. Short and briskly-paced, this is a fun tour de force for horror fans. Karloff, Lugosi, stormy nights, torture dungeons ... what's not to like?

The Black Cat (1934)
First pairing of Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi is their best together. Karloff is a satan-worshipping cult leader who is visited by arch nemesis Lugosi, who wants to settle an old score. Tense rivalry between these two, with Lugosi refreshingly cast as one of the good guys this time around. Stylish art deco setting adds immeasaurably to the proceedings.

The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) No matter how many times I've tried this Hammer horror, it has never managed to impress me very much. A young werewolf child is born when a peasant woman is raped by a hairy old derelict (go figure). Add to the legend that the baby was born on the same day as Christ, and you've got an eternally cursed young man. I always catch my head nodding here and there when I watch this, as there isn't much going on aside from a lot of talk, talk, talk. Werewolf makeup is terrific, but we only see it for the last 10 minutes. There are three reasons to endure this movie: one is the aforementioned climax, and the other two are Yvonne Romain.

Helter Skelter (1976)
Too-long 'Made-for-TV' film that probably worked better in two parts than it does as a three hour feature. Based on his book, this is more the story of prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi's dedicated efforts in tracking down Charles Manson and the members of his murdering Family than it is about the characters and events themselves. I think I would have preferred it more as an objective narrative from the outside.

Brown Bunny, The (2004) BOMB

Vincent Gallo’s controversial film was one that I was really looking forward to but at the two minute mark of the film I really wanted to turn it off. This is the type of film that should have been a home movie about a depressed maniac being alone and that’s that. Instead Gallo tries to do an art picture but it doesn’t work at all, although I certainly wouldn’t call this one of the worst films ever made. As much as I hate to say it but it’s clear by watching this bomb that the guy does have some talent and I think some of this talent shines through here but in the end the film rubbed me the wrong way and never got me involved in the story. I was annoyed by Gallo’s character and really didn’t care what was going to happen to him. It was also quite annoying because it seems Gallo is begging the audience to care and love him yet he doesn’t give us a reason to do so. I can certainly understand how some would fall into the film but that didn’t happen with me. I would be interested in seeing the Cannes cut to learn how Roger Ebert went from a BOMB to a three star rating.

Virgin Spring, The (1960)

Ingmar Bergman’s tale of a virgin who gets raped and murdered only to have her father (Max von Sydow) seek vengeance against the men who did it. I’ve seen countless ripoff’s of this film, the most famous one being Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left, which I think I have even less respect for now. It’s rather hard not to compare these films but I really enjoyed the religious aspects thrown into this version as well as the straight-forward nature of the story. I read a couple reviews that said this wasn’t as “deep” as previous Bergman films, which is certainly true but I think that adds something to this film. The rape and revenge aspects were a lot more graphic and gory in later films but the power behind those scenes here can’t be matched. The intensity of the father seeking revenge is top notch as is the performance from von Sydow, which is perfect throughout the film. The beautiful B&W cinematography also adds a lot to the film and I’d also say this is one of the best looking movies I’ve ever seen.

Cut and Run (1985)

A TV reporter tries to crack the American war on drugs so she travels to Columbia where she encounters the drug war mixed with a crazed vet and some cannibals. This was director Ruggero Deodato’s third “cannibal/jungle” film following Man From Deep River and the infamous Cannibal Holocaust and this here is certainly the weakest of the group. The film is way too slow and boring and there are way too many different ideas trying to be done in the film. The so called “message” of wars on drugs doesn’t do the trick either. Lisa Blount, Richard Lynch, Karen Black and Michael Berryman star. The only real reason to watch this is for gore hounds because there are plenty of gory decapitations and one scene where a man is split in half.

Erotic Rites of Frankenstein, The (1972)

Jess Franco’s second attempt at a Frankenstein film is certainly better than the previous one, Dracula, Prisoner of Frankenstein. The evil Cagliostro (Howard Vernon) kills Dr. Frankenstein (Dennis Price) with the aid of a “birdwoman” and then steals the monster so that he can take the world over. This is an extremely bizarre film that really doesn’t have a story but its uniquness makes it worth viewing. This was the Spanish version, which features none of the nudity of the French version yet features some additional scenes with Lina Romay. These scenes really don’t add anything, except a longer running time but they’re interesting to note for being Romay’s first of 100+ films for Franco. The French nude scenes were a bonus on the DVD but I’m really not sure how much they would have added to the film. The silver skinned monster is interesting to say the least and his rampage at the end is fun. Britt Nichols co-stars.

Mike,

THE EROTIC RITES OF FRANKENSTEIN is on my all-time list of worst films ever made. Still, having read the DVDDrive-In review of the disc, and now your own, I'm thinking of giving it another look somewhere down the line. As poor as DRACULA, PRISONER OF FRANKENSTEIN also was, I preferred it to RITES.

First time viewings in Red

20,000 Years in Sing Sing (1932)
Spencer Tracy gets released from prison to visit his dying girl (Bette Davis).

Baby Face (1933)
Pre-code gem stars Barbara Stanwyck as a tramp who sleeps her way to the top.

San Quentin (1937)
Standard prison flick stars Bogart as a con trying to go straight & Pat O’Brien as a straight-up Captain of the guards.

The Amazing Dr Clitterhouse (1938)
Edward G Robinson is a scientist studying criminology who joins up with Bogart’s gang in order to study them.

Invisible Stripes (1939)
George Raft is an ex-con trying to go straight for his little brother (William Holden). When things don’t go right he joins up with his crooked ex-con pal Bogart & his gang.

King of the Underworld (1939)
A widowed Doctor plots revenge on the gangster (Bogart) who killed her husband.

The Unsuspected (1947)
Standard whodunit murder-mystery stars Claude Raines as a Mystery Radio Show Host.

Island in the Sky (1953)
Pretty good drama stars John Wayne as the Captain of an army transport plane which crash-lands in the uncharted frozen wastelands of the Artic.

The High and the Mighty (1954)
Grand Hotel-like melodrama stars John Wayne as the Co-Pilot of an Airliner which develops engine trouble over the Pacific. I guess this could be the blueprint of those Airport films from the 70’s.

The Devil at 4 O’Clock (1961)
Spencer Tracy stars as a drunkard priest who enlists the aid of some prisoners to help some sick children off a volcanic island.

Wild Rovers (1971)
Melancholy yet whimsical Western stars William Holden & Ryan O’Neil as a couple of cowboys who decide to rob the local bank. The sons of the rancher they worked for (Tom Skerritt & Joe Don Baker) follow them in hot pursuit.

Jabberwocky (1977)
Rare Terry Gilliam misfire has Michael Palin in the dark ages. Sort of an oddly unfunny follow-up to MP’s Holy Grail.

Ong-Bak Thai Warrior (2003)
Look Ma no wires! Refreshing return to bone crunching martial arts action as a Thai country boy seeks the stolen head of his village’s religious idol. Very cool.

Sahara (2005)
Entertaining action vehicle stars Matthew McConaughey as treasure hunting adventurer Dirk Pitt.

Also upgraded to the New Extended SE DVD of Gladiator (2000) ***

The Collection (Blu-Ray High Definition/DVD)

Pre-orders - BLU-RAY: Akira, The Dark Knight, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Death Proof, King Kong, La Femme Nikita, Planet Terror, Raging Bull, Ronin, The Third Man DVD: .................
