Thanks for the info, Jeff. I will definitely try to check out Love Story on TCM then. Now all I need to do is turn my cable back on! (I turn it off for the summers, so much more to do than veg out in front of the tube)

I believe he was talking about Love Affair, not Love Story which is a compeletly different movie.

Watched Cape Fear. A competent thriller, but nothing special to me. The only thing that really stuck out was Bernard Herrmann's score. He's my favorite film composer, but this is easily my least favorite score of his. Sounded like a b-movie composer trying to evoke Psycho.

Thrills - 10 left

Heroes/Villians - 14 left

Ghost

I had high hopes for this film. A light-hearted romantic comedy ghost story sounds right up my alley. Hell, at one time I even had this on my to buy list as a blind purchase, something I almost never do.

Unfortunately, this film did not live up to my expectations. I don't normally hold predictability against a film (very few films aren't predictable), but this one was so irritatingly predictable, that I sat there irritated because I knew what was going to happen, and then later, when it did happen, I was even more irritated. Add to that, that (for lack of a better term) a chick flick approach was taken to the romance, and you have a film that was a real disappointment to me.

Passions - 22 left

We rob banks

Bonnie and Clyde, the stylish and violent ‘lovers on the run’ film by Arthur Penn is a real treat, as he turns a fairly routine story into depression-era myth. Although it is a little hard to know sometimes whether Penn is taking this all too seriously, the film has lost little of its impact over the years.

Flatt and Scruggs provide a fine background, that fits in perfectly with the era and with the pace of the film.

I watched a few films from the lists this weekend:

King Kong - Haven't seen this movie since I was a kid. I was surprised at how well it held up. A

On the Beach - A

Doctor Zhivago - A

An American in Paris - A-

Amadeus - B

The Palm Beach Story - I have thoroughly enjoyed every Sturges film I've seen. It's a shame that only two of his films are available on DVD A

Update time.

Topper – Not one of the classic, great comedies from the 30s but very enjoyable nonetheless. I liked it enough to watch Topper Returns, also on the DVD, which was equally funny.

Roman Holiday – Because of Gregory Peck’s death, a friend showed this on a theater screen. Great way to see this with an audience. Very enjoyable film.

I have recounted all of the lists and they should appear as such.
Movies : FINISHED
Thrills : 10 left – Last seen: King Kong
Laughs : 25 left – Last seen: Topper
Passions : 27 left – Last seen: Roman Holiday
Heroes/Villains : 12 left – Last seen: Boys Town
Stars : 98 left – Last seen: Roman Holiday

Modern Times, out in a brand-new DVD, allowing me to both watch this film in much better condition and to knock off three AFI categories at once.

Chaplin gives us a reprise of ‘The Little Tramp’, fittingly walking off into the sunset. If there is anyone who has not yet seen this (and I expect that there is not), this should go to near the top of your queue.
