Re: Kevin Smith announces "Clerks 2"
I was skeptical about this one, but damn was it good. With the blend of vulgarity and emotion, I'd put it right up there with Chasing Amy. Just a great movie. I never thought I'd say it, but I'm glad Kevin decided not to go the Green Hornet route and return to his "old self."

What is so wrong with Kevin Smith choosing to thank his fans, who as the box office shows, still only make up a vast minority of film goers?

Road House: Special Edition DVD. Kevin and Scott Mosier do a full-length commentary for the flick that is one of the funniest damn things I've ever heard in my life.
|
Damn I think this just sold a copy of that DVD to me

I think you'll find that it's money well spent. After listening to this I was convinced that Smith and Mosier should do a commentary track for every bad film ever made.

Re: Kevin Smith announces "Clerks 2"
Here's some (bad) news from Kevin about the iPod commentary:
http://www.newsaskew.com and scroll down to Friday, August 11:
Quote:
"This is what I've been told by the Weinstein Co. folks...
Turns out that exhibitors (folks that own the theaters) weren't too keen on the idea of people showing up to the movies with iPods. They felt it was going to be too distracting (or something) for other people in the theater who weren't wearing iPods for the show - like the commentary-listeners would be laughing when nobody else was laughing, and that'd create some kind of problem. Based on that, they suggested that if Weinstein Co. went through with the commentary track promotion, they'd start pulling the flick from screens. So the commentary track promotion has been tabled until we're at a very low theater count (which is starting to happen now).
For the record, from what I was told, AMC Theaters was supportive of the commentary idea. So if it still winds up ultimately happening (and it better be soon, as we've only got about two weeks of theatrical life left), check the flick out in an AMC Theater while listening to the commentary track. You won't get any shit for doing so there."

Re: Kevin Smith announces "Clerks 2"
Personally, I agree with the theaters on this one. Just as I wouldn't want someone listening to their iPod for music during the film, I wouldn't want someone listening to a commentary track during the film either. I think it sets a bad precedent; I love commentary tracks within the comfort of my own home. But I think that's where they should stay.

Re: Kevin Smith announces "Clerks 2"
The theater will let a crying baby or a child of any age (as long as there's an accompanying adult) into Clerks II but they care what someone listens to on an iPod? That's balanaced.
Unless it's Cape Fear Robert DeNiro, I don't understand how someone laughing at any point in a comedy could be disruptive to the proceedings.

I don't know if I agree. I think the theatre chains are wrong in doing this. This is probably the most clever way to drum up repeat business I've heard of in a long time. The ipod is a person device, I don't see what difference it makes if the guy five rows in front or behind you is wearing a pair of earbuds.

It wouldn't be a problem if people listened to things at a normal volume. I can't count the number of subway trips where I had a soundtrack forced upon me by a passenger happy to make him or herself deaf by playing it loud enough for the whole car to hear.
Understandably, the theater noise would mask most of that. But I still think it's an unhealthy blending of the home (private) domain and the theatrical (public) domain. I wish they'd take the same stand with cellphones, pagers, PSPs, blackberries, etc.
On a more positive note, my friend wanted to see it so I went again tonight. It helped up surprisingly well on the second viewing.

Oh I agree and you make a good point, but seperate 'commentary showings' would take care of that problem.
I just don't get how the industry isn't getting behind this. I think it's one of the more inovative ways to encourage repeat viewings that I've heard of in a long time. Sure, for Clerks 2 there isn't that much of a potential windfall. But imagine if they had done this for Lord of the Rings. New Line could have charged for the download of the commentary and both the theatre owners and the studio would have benifited from even more repeat business.
