"Rating" for Spartacus

My 10 yr old wanted to see Gladiator, which I think is too violent for him. I'm thinking of watching Spartacus instead but it's UR. Can someone who's seen it give me an idea what it would be rated by today's standards?

The restored version has a PG-13 US certification. That would be about right.

Thanks Edwin, I didn't even know there was a newer restored version. Two nuggets of info for one question - appreciate it!

Though Spartacus is considered Mr. Kubrick's most "accessible" film, it does bear his unmistakable signature. There is some innuendo in the film that will escape your son, along with strongly implied homosexuality. It's about as sophisticated as period epics ever got.

My point being, it's not so much the content you should be concerned about but, rather, will your son even understand what's going on? It's not just an "adventure movie."

There's also violence in the battle scenes. There's some blood spurtage, as well as limbs being cut off as well.
