I just heard about it minutes ago. But the Arclight Cinemas is presenting a 70mm screening of Stanley Kubrick's 1968 landmark cinematic masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey at Hollywood's Cinerama Dome on Wednesday, August 18.
A co-worker just informed me. After I deal with my deadline within a half hour, I will get more information.
Needless to say, I am so there. And if any L.A.-area HTFers want to meet up at the Dome, then by all means please do so.

It's definitely a 70mm print then? I've been meaning to call Arclight for the past couple weeks to ask that, but it's been slipping my mind. I dunno know if I can afford this, but then I dunno know if I can afford to miss it either. I've watched 2001 three times and never loved it. Once on TCM, once on my HT after I got the DVD, and once a few weeks later on a helluva projector but really crappy sound. Each time it got better as sound and then picture size improved; this led me to conclude that the film really needs to be seen on the big screen to really 'get' it and 70mm if at all possible (cause 70 rocks anyways). So I think I'll be there to see if I remain only moderate towards the film or end up loving it.

Jack, post that information. Hopefully, it's in the evening. I can make this, if it is so.

Yes, it's Wed, 8/18/2004 8:00 P.M.
Jack, how important is it to reserve seats here(with revivals)? Is walk-up possible?
I'm also going here on 9/10/04 for THX1138

You left coasters have me so jealous. You get 70mm and other large format on a semi-regular basis, but I'm lucky to get even a 35mm revival of anything in the Southeast.

Boo-hoo, look at the Peter Apruzzese thread directly above. Talk about jealous.
Jack, can we make this thread "sticky?" It's only a week. I'd hate for RobertR and others to miss the invite(info).

It is best to order tickets in advance. 2001 in 70mm sells out in this town -- when people know about it.
If there's a real head-count situation here, I need to know who's going. I am going to ask a co-worker of mine to come along as well.
As for posting this as a sticky, I feel kind of funny doing that to a thread I originated. But you have a point. Somebody should PM RobertR. He certainly likes this film.

Just saw this thread. Yes, I'm interested Jack. Do we want to get seats together? I remember shocking you when I told you I have the same attitude about wanting to see it in a theater that Adam S expressed. I get chills when the words "2001: A Space Odyssey" appear on a BIG screen.
Edit: I just checked, and it's showing at 8 pm. I should be able to make it.

I've seen 2001 in 70mm on a true curved 2.59:1 Cinerama screen with 6-track magnetic 'surround' (five front, one rear).
Don't miss it.
