Steve, a couple of points.

"It would be a very odd choice for the Predators to have a pyramid set in Antarctica given that their two films make no mistake their preference for temperate or hot climates."
The one expert explains how Antarctica used to be attatched to a greater land mass, so that all 3 cultures could have built it, so it wasn't always freezing. To further this point, during the flashback, you see that it is a desert and looks warm, with ancient people sacrificing themselves.

Antarctica being a part of a singular landmass doesn't really match the concept of Mayan culture, which wasn't established till long after Antarctica was in the upper hemisphere. Considering it happened over a hundred million years ago, it's a good way to show some early dinosaur and mammal migration, but I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything close to human like around that time. It'd have to have been a cold choice when the Predators used human labor.
And I'm pretty sure the flashback was showing one of those lost Mayan civilizations being eradicated as the Predators use their nuke. I don't think that was showing the snow pyramid.

"I understand that they do this safari every hundred years, but how did a whaling team get there to start it up?"
Well this last took place in 1904, so the whaling rig could have been set up any time between 1904 and 2004 and they would not have known anything about the pyramid beneath them or what it is used for.

The characters specifically say that the whaling rig was mysteriously abandoned in 1904, coinciding with the last hunt. It would have to have been set up sometime before 1904 and then lured down to the pyramid. Again, kind of a coincidence for them to establish camp right over the hunting grounds only to be lured down years later.
Holadem,
I know what you mean about the lead character. It's the dialogue itself, which I don't recall repeating any character's name other than Weyland more than one or two times.
