Hollywood's First Feature-Length Comedy A Hit!

Outtakes from the AP Story by Bob Thomas:

Quote:
The Samuel Goldwyn Theater rocked with laughter, and not because of the latest Jim Carrey or Will Ferrell comedy. The feature presentation was the newly restored "Tillie's Punctured Romance" - Hollywood's first feature-length comedy film.

"Tillie's Punctured Romance" proved a sensation in the 1910s. The Film and Television Archive at the University of California, Los Angeles undertook restoration of the film with help from the British Film Institute.

Many of the movie's copies were in sad shape, and UCLA restorationist Ross Lipman sought help from archives and private collectors in the U.S. and Europe.

"I looked at 30 copies of the film and ended up using 13 of them," Lipman said.

The film is 82 minutes long, which Lipman believes is close to the original released in 1914.

"Tillie's" will be shown at the Pordenone Silent Film Festival in northern Italy Oct. 13, and the restored version will be available to theaters and collectors.

Wow! I had no idea this was the first feature-length comedy in Hollywood! Dressler and Chaplin sound like a great team.

Does anyone know if the current DVD is this newly-restored version? I love it when the silents get their due by Hollywood
