A director who isn't interested in "fixing" his old movies...

David Cronenberg.

http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/nationa...DVD040601.html

Quote:
With other films like Videodrome and Fast Company scheduled for DVD release in the coming months, the "Baron of Blood" has been reviewing his early work for the DVD commentary. He feels no urge, however, to go back and fiddle with the footage.

"It's like an archeological dig. You're seeing the artifacts of a particular time," he said about watching Rabid after 20 years. "I had no impulse to change, to spruce it up, to edit it a little tighter...I'm very happy to let it be sort of a documentary of that time and place for me."

This is incredible! He leaves it alone! What a concept!

I salute him.

I won't buy a director's cut of a recent movie, let alone a classic.

I wouldn't call him the 'Baron of Blood'. 'Prince of the perverse' is a much better title.

The only "tweaking" that should be done to films for re-release is restoration!

a big to Cronenberg for his not being a Lucas-fiddler.

"Did you know that more people are murdered at 92 degrees Fahrenheit than any other temperature? I read an article once. Lower temperatures, people are easy-going, over 92 and it's too hot to move, but just 92, people get irritable."

I thought Videodrome was to be a Director's Cut.

"The Criterion Collection is proud to present it [Videodrome] in its full-length unrated edition."

Ha, I guess you're right. Technically Cronenberg isn't talking about director's cuts, though, he's talking about retrospective cuts. I just spun it to my viewpoint.

This cut has been available forever, I think. This is me beginning to rationalize.

The term Director's Cut is often misused around here. Technically, it refers to the cut submitted to the studio by the director at the end of the editing process, before the men in suits get their grubby hands all over it.

So it looks like Videodrome is an actual "director's cut" i.e. made back in the day, and it is clear from his quote that what he is opposed to is the Lucasesque (Lucasinian?) practice of revisiting the work years after the fact.

Either way, I'm looking forward to the new Criterion disc!
