Star Wars: Why continue to care?

How come nobody seems to give up on Star Wars? Ever since George Lucas started tinkering with his original film and the work of two other artists. People complain about the modified versions of the movies being the only ones made available in high quality, but will still purchase them anyway. Why?

The original 1977 movie was a groundbreaking classic which worked on many levels. It was the first "light" Sci-Fi movie which attempted to utilize (then) state-of-the-art SFX. Since it was really a "Sword and Sorcery" movie with a Science Fiction facade, it also tapped in to the large Fantasy following of the day as well.

For many of us, it was the movie that "turned us on" to movies. For two hours we could sit down in the theater and feel as though we were in that Galaxy Far Far Away.

As such, even in its present bastardized, watered-down state, it will still and forever hold a place of honor among movie lovers everywhere.

And it belongs in our DVD collection.

I don't give up on them because:

1) I actually like the prequels. I even rank The Phantom Menace above the original Star Wars. Yup, it's true, fanboys.

2) While I would prefer George would leave well enough alone, and limited his tinkering to cleaning up the SFX in the original trilogy, I don't find his changes to be so offensive that they ruin the films for me. And well, when I get the urge to watch the original cuts, I have my laserdiscs.

Man, an hour wasted on this sig! Thanks, Toshiba! :p

No offense to anybody here, but this topic is very much discussed in the existing Star Wars-on-DVD thread. Not to mention that there's a mammoth, marathon Star Wars saga thread here in the Movies section.
