Man, what a 180 from Moriarty's review...

does it?

this brings to mind the hellboy story called "The Vårcolac", where hellboy is confronted by a colossal vampire who, we are told, hates hellboy not because of what he is, but because of what he could be, but isn't.

until a while ago, i had no interest in the punisher. at all. but since garth ennis has been writing the series with his characteristic and inimitable genius, it's one of my favorites.

which is to say, before ennis, i had no real concept of what the punisher could be as a story. and now i do. which means it's certainly conceivable to me that the new punisher movie could be much worse than the original, since it's failure can be all the more catastrophic given the available benchmark of perfection in ennis' version of the character, a benchmark not availbale to the makers of the first movie.

in other words, i may very well detest this movie not for what it is, but for what it could have been, but isn't.

I trust Moriarty far more than Harry. Harry's probably just pissed that Jonathan Hensleigh didn't buy him off. The Berardinelli review is a bit more troubling.

Well I'm still jazzed to see this one. AICN's reviews don't hold a lot of weight with me.

I agree with Adam. Knowles isn't the most...reliable of viewers. While the talkbackers are the most amusing part of the site...they bring up a good point. He has no objectivity. James B. is a different story. I don't always agree with him, but he's certainly objective and fair. We'll see.

Take care,
Chuck

Yeah James B. reviews usually parallel mine as well.

Not too tragic for me as I never liked the vigilante angle of the Punisher. He seems more like a villian - especially after continuing his crusade after avenging his family.

That's certainly my concern. Hmmm...wonder if Scott's seen it yet.

A snippet of conversation between Matt Stone and I:

Maulrat: punisher?
ScottFromPhilly: funniest movie of the year
Maulrat: haha
Maulrat: [han]That bad, huh[/han]
ScottFromPhilly: no lie, dude. people were laughing out loud
Maulrat: jeez man, didn't look that bad from the trailer
ScottFromPhilly: it starts as a rough-hewn and gritty drama; slowly becomes an unwitting farce.
Maulrat: haha, well then I have to see it :-)
ScottFromPhilly: and you know I dig Hensleigh's other work, so it was a disappointment
Maulrat: and dammit, you still haven't told me what you thought of vol. 2...TELL ME!
