Philip K. Dick "A Scanner Darkly"

Canoe news link (good for a few days)

A few bits from the article.

Quote:
Keanu Reeves will be starring in an adaptation of the Philip K. Dick novel "A Scanner Darkly," Variety reports.

Quote:
Richard Linklater ("School of Rock") is in talks to direct the film.

Does anyone know if Linklater would script this himself, or take advantage of the script that Charlie Kaufman already wrote?

For any who are interested, Kaufman's script is available for download on the website www.beingcharliekaufman.com.

A PKD thread with more than one reply? GARY, tell me your secret.

An answer to Jefferson's query, yes it is the Linklater script, as of now.

Filming has just started here in Austin. Robert Downey Jr. was working out at my gym last night - slogging away on the stepmill with a hoodie sweatshirt on to hide his face, studying what appeared to be a big binder of production notes. Even the local press has been pretty quiet about this one, aside from this little snippet from the Austin American Statesman:

Quote:
Add Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Rory Cochran to the cast of Richard Linklater's "A Scanner Darkly," the Philip K. Dick sci-fi adaptation headlined by Keanu Reeves and set to lens here later this month in live action. Later it will be animated à la "Waking Life."

Some more and some of the same information from the PKD official site.

Interesting to hear the "PKD Trust's" involvement. Once again, high hopes.

The trailer is up on IFILM right now: http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2665143?htv=12

It's a really interesting look, much refined from "Waking Life" Should be an interesting project, looks like proper science fiction rather than scifi-action.

Great novel. Linklater is an interesting filmmaker and I will be looking forward to seeing this adaptation.

I saw the trailer before CONSTANTINE -- looks very intriguing.

Nice cast in the film too. Plus a great writer/director in front of it and star source material. Put me in the excited camp. Loved Waking Life, really enjoy Dick's writing/story concepts, like most of everything else Linklater does. Lots of different reasons to be hopeful here.
