I know they're not as 'big' an event as the Oscars, but the British Academy of Film and Television Awards are reasonably entertaining. Here are the main results from last night's ceremony:

Best film
Winner: The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King
Other contenders: Big Fish, Cold Mountain, Lost In Translation, Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World

Best Director
Winner: Peter Weir (Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World)
Other contenders: Tim Burton (Big Fish), Anthony Minghella (Cold Mountain), Peter Jackson (The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King), Sofia Coppola (Lost In Translation)

Best Actor
Winner: Bill Murray (Lost In Translation)
Other contenders: Benicio del Toro (21 Grams), Johnny Depp (Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl), Jude Law (Cold Mountain), Sean Penn (21 Grams), Sean Penn (Mystic River)

Best actress
Winner: Scarlett Johansson (Lost In Translation)
Other contenders: Anne Reid (The Mother), Naomi Watts (21 Grams), Scarlett Johansson (Girl With A Pearl Earring), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill Vol 1)

Cinematography
Winner: Andrew Lesnie, The Lord of the Rings

Best foreign language film
Best non-English language film
Winner: In This World
Other contenders: The Barbarian Invasions; Belleville Rendez-vous; Etre et Avoir; Good Bye Lenin!; Spirited Away

Special Visual Effects
Winner: Joe Letteri/Jim Rygiel/Randall William Cook/Alex Funke, The Lord of the Rings

Editing
Winner: Sarah Flack, Lost in Translation

Best supporting actor
Winner: Bill Nighy (Love Actually)
Other contenders: Albert Finney (Big Fish); Sir Ian McKellen (The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King); Paul Bettany (Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World); Tim Robbins (Mystic River)

Best supporting actress
Winner: Renee Zellweger (Cold Mountain)
Other contenders: Emma Thompson (Love Actually); Holly Hunter (Thirteen); Judy Parfitt (Girl With A Pearl Earring); Laura Linney (Mystic River)

Nothing there that's likely to cause any great surprises, except for the foreign language film. In a year that has Spirited Away and Etre et Avoir on the shortlist, choosing In This World seems perverse, and smacks of pandering to political correctness.

IMHO Lost in Translation should have won Best Picture (LOTR had already got an award for popular choice amongst cinema goers), but I can't quibble very strongly with the choice that was made.
