I don't think it's the (arguable) quality of the first film. I think this is just a case of "Hey, this is a plotline that we'd really like to use again. We can either try to change it enough to avoid being called a straight ripoff, or we can acknowledge the earlier film and call this one a re-imagining or remake or whatever."
But let's be fair: the whole 'rent a popular girl to become popular' schpiel ain't exactly Shakespeare.
As far as Can't Buy Me Love goes, I like it quite a bit. It's wittier than many of its late-80's teen-flick peers and it's surprisingly well-acted. There are some solid laughs and a nice little moral that's plainly obvious yet not forcefully jammed down your throat.
It ain't high art, but it's one I've always enjoyed.

I really like Can't Buy Me Love. Can't particularly see how a remake would do it better. Of course, if they're aiming for the teens, it'll be fine since none of them have seen the original anyway.
(sigh) I'm beginning to understand what it feels like to get older!

One of my absolute favorite 80s movies. Wish I had the money to do that in high school.

Dude, it had Amanda Peterson! (sorry it had to be said again).
I quite enjoyed it. Again, typical (if not a cut above average) 80's teen angst comedy, but hey, it was part of my adolescent experience...

Maybe, at age 26, I'm too young--but who the hell is Amanda Peterson?
If she's not approaching Pheobe Cates, she's not worth mentioning.

I think Amanda Peterson played the role of Cindy Mancini.
I used to daydream about her in the late 80s ...
