Chronicles of Riddick Trailer

http://www.apple.com/trailers/univer...clesofriddick/
"Are you going to stop the monsters now?"
"I AM the monster."
An improvement over the teaser trailer. I thought Pitch Black was great, I'm looking forward to this.

Looked a little more cheezy than I expected. For some reason I get associations to Paul Andersons dreadful Soldier.

This is really strange, I've seen the commercial for this a couple of times now on TV. While some shots look decent- most of the CG looks like they belong in a TV movie or something. Rather unexpected in this day and age when CG is standard issue, especially on a film with a moderate(to high?) budget as this.

it looks like a DUNE clone.

And this is a bad thing?

This looks to me like it could be a very good sci-fi/action movie. From the trailer it looks like a lot of good elements are present. Let's hope they don't botch up the story by the way the elements are put together.

The CG on the trailer looked bad to me and when they feature so much CGI, it's usually a sign of a bad movie, IMO (see-Van Helsing). Pitch Black I liked a lot, but it was a one trick pony. COR doesn't look like it has anything in common with it (other than Riddick).

The only reason why Pitch Black worked was the fact that the character Riddick was just too damn cool... I think the fate of this film hangs on the same thread. You can throw all the CGI out the window but if Riddick is not written as well as he was in Pitch Black I know I, for one, will be very dissapointed.

That's an odd statement considering that all of Pixar's movies are 100% CG, and I believe most would agree that they're all good movies.

I think CG does not make a movie bad. A bad story makes the movie bad.

It appears (from the trailer) there's enough good elements in COR to make this a really good movie. So long as they have focused on the story line and used the CG to support the story, I think it will do really well.

What I see possible are:
1) multiple factions in a war with plots, schemes and politics
2) lots of action
3) some religious aspects that may or may not have a sci-fi basis which might provide some mystery.
All this in a sci-fi setting.

Perhaps I'm seeing too much in the movie trailer.

If they're trying to use CG alone to sell the movie, then, yeah, that doesn't work.

John, you know as well as I that the Pixar films are designed from the ground up as CGI only. I am not saying CGI per se causes bad films. I am talking about CGI effects in a live action film where, in general, I just tend to see less emphasis on story and more emphasis on effects in these kinds of films. When they spend all that money on effects, they seem to concentrate on that rather than the story. Pixar does it right, one would think more of the other companies would catch on that the story is the key not the CGI.

I certainly hope that COR will be a good film as much as I liked Pitch Black, but as different as it looks from the original, they may have been better off without trying to use the same characters.
