How The West Was Won Downloads

Mart Hart's Widscreenmuseum has just posted downloads of two How The West Was Won posters he produced for upcoming 3 Strip Cinerama engagements.

Thanks. Funny thing about the poster art is on #1 the top illustration is representing a sequence that was borrowed from "Raintree County" and converted to 3 strip Cinerama. It was not actually filmed with the 3 camera rig. Poster #2 has the river raft sequence which has some 3 camera set ups but was filmed mostly with 70mm Panavision cameras for rear projection and "in the water" views. When you see the film you'll notice how the image gets grainer and loses the wide angle perspective. MGM wanted to save money whenever possible. The companion film made almost at the same time, "The Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm" was 100% 3 Camera Cinerama. Too bad we may never be able to see that film in the format again as the camera negs were destroyed.

One other bit of trivia. The epilogue with the Cinerama camera flying over the country are outtakes from the 1952 "This is Cinerama" film.

The opening sequence flying through the mountains is also a TIS outtake. Rejected because of all of the squashed bugs stuck to the front of the plane.

This was later cured by keeping the front of the plane covered with paper until it reached an altitude above the "bug zone".
