Jodie Foster talks about a theory that, All things being equal the one that makes the most logical sense is the correct one. It was Achmans(?sp) Theory or something like that or Achmans root. I cant remember, anybody have a clue?

( Been awhile since I saw the film. )

Hi Tom,

She was referring to Hackem's (sp?) razor. It is a scientific rationale that states:

"All things being equal, the simplest explanation is usually correct."

The basis for this rationale is nature very rarely makes things more complicated than necessary - it simply takes too much energy and is inefficient.

Notice, however, that its states "usually". I guess, we sometimes over-simplify complex problems - especially when we do not have all of the information.

...for what its worth.

-Ross

It's Hokum's Razor, which says that all things being equal, the simplest solution to a problem is usually the right one.

What is Ockham's Razor?

Quote:
Ockham's Razor is the principle proposed by William of Ockham in the fourteenth century: "Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate", which translates as 'entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily'.

That's technically a translation of the wrong version of Occam's (a.k.a. Ockham's) razor: "entia non multiplicanda sed propter neccesitatem" ('Entities are not to be multiplied except out of necessity.')

His is : "plurality (i.e., multiplicity) is not to be posed without necessity"

I understand there may be more versions.

It's a rule of thumb, not a straightjacket.
