It wasn't that bad. In fact, it was nice cheesy fun in an old school pulp fantasy sort of like way.

I've just been to see LXG and i'm not disappointed, but thats only because I went in with very very low expectations. It's a pretty poor film, but entertaining for 90 minutes or so. Loads of problems with it, most (if not all) have already been mentioned. Mr Hyde's transformation, just looks like flashes, then there is his make up which looks rather rubbery.
The nautilus in Venice I found particularly stupid. With all the other stuff he had, surely he would have some small boats they could have taken in.
Did anyone else spot (hear) the reference to Moby Dick? I haven't read the graphic novels or anything so is there any particular reason for this reference to be there?

I haven't seen the movie but I did hear that they worked the "call me Ishmael" line in there, but in the comics there are *tons* of allusions to other literature of the time, from both famous books and very obscure ones. Nemo's shipmates all being guys from other stories is among these I think the main idea for it, aside from winking at the audience a bit, is to really steep you in the idea that all these fictitious characters truly exist in the same world. Not just a few of them; *all* of them are there and from every genre. Like I said, I haven't seen the movie yet so I'm not sure how far they take that concept in comparison to the comics.

Interesting indeed, and surprisingly accurate. Thanks for the link.

Interesting article, though everything I've read about LXG's production is rather vague. The one part that made me chuckle was:
| Fox also says that "League" is not competing with "Pirates of the Caribbean." Rather, the studio says, its film offers a highbrow alternative for discriminating moviegoers looking for an original film, not a sequel or a film that began life as a theme park ride. |
Forgive me, but ! I understand that Fox wants to support their movie but this seems the wrong way to go about it. We are, after all, talking about a movie that was inspired by someone else's novel, an admittedly great novel - but one that WAS inspired by about a dozen earlier works. So if they're going to harp on LXG's "originality", I find that a bit disingenuous.
Plus the movie could never have been made were most of the characters not "in the public domain".
Though I didn't dig the movie, I certainly didn't LOATHE it. And I am glad that A) several people are enjoying it and B) it did fairly well in its opening weekend. Seems to me that this was a project cursed with a whole lot of bad luck and more than a few bad ideas.
I won't be holding my breath for a sequel tho.

Shame about Norrington. Blade looked a lot better than it's budget, and it was a visually inventive film. He was a director to watch.
I'll see the film on DVD in four months...
Take care,
Chuck

Yep, good article. The crack about, "dumbing down a comic book" is a good point.

From the article it sounds like this is a Dune-style misfire. The director has distanced himself from the project because of his bad experience. Today, though, I think Dune is more appreciated than it was in '84. I wonder if this will hold true for LXG. It was certainly quite entertaining. I would buy the DVD in a heartbeat if it had an extended/director's cut(Along with the theatrical cut too of course)!

I finally got around to looking at reviews of this film. My favorite quote is:
| "It grows into its suckiness -- it's not sure what to do with it at first, and then it gets comfortable with the idea that it's sucking, and then it wholly embraces it..." -- MaryAnn Johanson, FLICK FILOSOPHER |
Perhaps if they went into the original concept development of the film with the idea that it wasn't a summer movie, perhaps they might have made a good film. Going from one big action set piece to the other left no room to get some intelligence in as there was in the novel. I don't know how they would justify the budget though if they went the intelligent route. Perhaps if they took the same approach as they did with Minority Report, which would be to wrap the story with some action scenes. Just musing.

Ha! Mary Ann is absolutely one of the best online critics out there. That quote is precisely what I would have said were I more clever and talented.
