With Confessions of a Dangerous Mind already set for a theatrical re-release later this year, Miramax now intends to re-release Chicago (with an 'additional scene'!) this July.
I got this news as an email blurb from Variety's website.
Interesting...

I assume that additional scene would be Zeta-Jones & Latifah singing "Class"??
Chicago has been out of first-run theaters in Houston for only a month or so here in Houston. Seems awful soon for a re-release.

It's still at one of the AMC first-runs in Columbus. It's not that odd to do a re-release so soon, it's just a first for Miramax for such a big picture AFAIK. Sure, the other films that have had re-releases in such a short time have never added scenes AFAIK, just outtakes and previews.
The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again.

Spy Kids had a scene added later in its release, right? (That's essentially a Miramax film since it's from Dimension.)
I think Miramax is doing this, in part, because it seems like they've pushed everything in their release schedule into October or later. Gotta have something to send to theaters.

Chicago's *still* in first-run theatres here in the DC area... If they do rerelease it (with "Class" inserted), I'll defintiely see it.

I love Chicago but I think this is greed.
Does the movie need to make more money???
Release the DVD with the extra scene.

There was a mini re-release of that sometime around August 2001 just before the video release. I even believe "Spy Kids 2" had a small rerelease as well after a few months, but with no added scenes. Just more screens.
Yeah, "Chicago" aka. The Movie That Won't Go Away (as I like to call it) is still in a theater or two in Vancouver, and I'm sure it won't leave until sometime next year. heh. The news of a rerelease doesn't surprise me.

Hell, no. Personally, I think it should be giving some back; specifically the $5 I spent this March.
But if Miramax and the various theaters who would book it think there's an audience, well, isn't it something they should do?
That said, it's frustrating because Miramax produces and purchases a lot of small, interesting movies and they already pushed their entire winter/spring schedule forward in order to promote Oscar candidates; this is another slot and portion of the advertising budget that could be used for stuff that really needs a push.
